Yesterday Leon foreshadowed Chief Minister Gallagher’s announcement today of a $6million 3.2km Civic Cycle Loop:

Construction will be undertaken in four stages – Marcus Clarke Street, Bunda Street, Rudd Street and Allara Street – creating a loop around the city and connecting to the Sullivans Creek and Lake Burley Griffin cycle paths that lead into the city.

“I’m pleased construction has begun on the Civic Cycle Loop, which will provide a continuous link around the city for cyclists,” the Chief Minister said.

“We know that in order to encourage more people onto bikes, safe infrastructure needs to be provided. This project will do that.

“The Civic Cycle Loop will provide cyclists with improved access to and around the City, minimising the risks associated with travel on congested footpaths and roads in the City area. To encourage less confident cyclists to ride more often, the majority of the Civic Cycle Loop will be segregated from general traffic.

“The first stage of construction will take place on Rudd Street, connecting Marcus Clarke Street and Northboune Avenue. This section will provide 240 metres of 1.8 metre wide on-road cycle lanes on either side of the street. Work on this section is due for completion in October 2012. Marcus Clarke Street will be the second section constructed followed by Bunda and Allara Streets. The entire project is due for completion in 2014.”

One hopes the nastiest snarl in Civic, crossing Barry Drive from the Sullivans Creek path, will not be neglected.

Clover More idiocy is spreading to Canberra. I’m sure cyclists will cut through the city not ride around it.

Six million shekels eh? What does one have to do to see an itemised account of the work being proposed? Correct me if I’m wrong but that’s $1875 per metre.

Are we sure that this will cost $6m and finished in OCT 2012? because given the record of this Labor government, it will probably cost twice as much and twice as long eg.. $12m and OCT 2013 to completed.
GDE anyone?

Or, knowing that there are grass clippings on the track, slow down to suit the conditions?

Yeah I know, crazy idea….

Grass clippings when they get wet are a hazard for all path users, they are usually combined with a bit of mud which makes them pretty slippery.

Speaking as a cyclist and a motorist who us based in Civic and uses my car to get to clients during the day. Could we just have a moratorium on roadwork? As much as I like cycling and other infrastructure every where I drive or ride now seems to be under construction.

And the hideous shifting maze of footpath roadworks!

Having said that once the centenary is over and the election is done we probably won’t see capital works in this town for a decade.

Key words here – On Road.

As a cyclist and a motorist (thats right folks, I ride a bike AND pay registration on 2 cars), I have seen the reckless abandon from both cyclists and motorists – both can at times be in the wrong, but no point being in the right if you’re dead.

Cyclists and fast moving steel coffins certainly don’t mix for me. This money would be better spent on refurbing current paths from Lyneham to LBG

Must you turn this into a car V cycling threead?

Then there is the Bowen drive crossing……….

You will have to talk to the NCA about this. Work was delayed because of the Scrivener Dam. If the NCA had installed pay parking in the Parliamentary Triangle ,Barton and Russell, they would have enough money to do Bowen and more!

These are not on road cycle lanes as reported by the Chief Minister but Cycle tracks which are physically separated by a curb. The main issues are at the intersections. There are certainly better solutions than what we have now.
Agree with the maintenance of the current paths not being up to scratch, particularity when the mowing crews are out and about. At least they could clear the paths of grass clippings after they have mowed!

I was a bit concerned that our Chiefly mentions on road cycle lanes, they are in fact much better and are what’s called in Copenhagen as ‘cycle tracks’ which are more than 2.5m wide each side of the road. These are truly the Copenhagen style lanes! Great stuff. Now lets fix the rest on the arterial roads around Canberra.
The only concern is if the cycle tracks will get priority at side roads and what happens at intersections with free turn slip lanes?

What about improving all those places for pedestrians….

How so? the whole place is geard towards cars & pedestrians.

While it is an admirable idea I would rather see a bit more money spent on our current off road infrastructure.

While there has been quite a bit spent on resurfacing some of was done sub par. Arear where there were tree root affecting the path were not dug up to remove the roots, rather they just lay a new layer of tar over them. This has been fine for a while but the tar has settled causing those sections to be just as rough as they were. Other sections were repaired correctly.

There is amost no ongoing patch up mainitinence, on the main route from Tuggeranong there is grass growing through the path in spots, the grass is encroaching in spots that the path is down to about a metre wide (Woden, near the pitch & put). Today, I had to ride on the other side of the path to avoid a tree overhanging a lane of the path.

Then there is the Bowen drive crossing.

I think this maintinence is priority over this project but as a cyclist I do welcome any improvements in infrastructure. If I can drop pff one of the shared path bridges that cross Parkes way & not have to dodge pedestrians through the middle of the city then I will be a happier camper.

What about improving all those places for pedestrians….
