Firefighters have rescued a distressed kayaker 300 metres from shore in Lake Burley Griffin.

ACT Fire & Rescue responded to the distress call along with the ACT Ambulance Service and ACT State Emergency Service.

Firefighters commandeered a ferry to reach the man near Black Mountain peninsula.

He was pulled out of the water and is being taken back to shore for assessment by intensive care paramedics.

Update to follow.

The 68 year-old man has been assessed by paramedics and treated for hypothermia.

He’s been transported by the ACT Ambulance Service to The Canberra Hospital in a stable condition.

The alarm was raised by a passer by. It’s believed he was in the water for 20 minutes by the time he was rescued by firefighters.

The ACT State Emergency Service are using a flood boat to retrieve the man’s kayak.

Wow, sledging volunteer search and rescue members, that has to be a bored afternoon without many left at all. At least make it entertaining if you are going to say something so beneath the mean. Paramedics going to get a mention?

I didn’t realise the lake was 600m wide. I suppose I’ve never really looked at it closely.

It depends on which part you are on, I would have thought some of it would be wider than that.

Any idea why he was distressed?

Had his wife left him?

Was he feeling like a dork for falling out of his kayak?

Was someone on those pedal boats going faster than he could paddle his sleek kayak?

Wasn’t there a recent story about F&R ACT not responding to a fire on a lake, but in this case they responded to a task the Water Police would have primary responsibility for?

I think you will find that that Police are not actually trained for rescue type operations but the FB is. I dont think the AFP actually have a rescue arm like the NSW Police do.

Does anyone have any info on this?

How many SES resources does it take to retrieve a Kayak? I hope they get to auction it off to cover their costs.

You`re a tool. I hope they get to sell all your shit when they have to come and rescue you.

It depends how bored they are at the time.
