Keep An Eye Out For Pro Camera Gear Going "Cheap"

This article in today’s CT refers to a cameraguy buddy of mine. The equipment is his livelihood, so if you come across anything or hear anything, please let the police know.

Yes, it was insured. But gear like this can’t just be replaced at the local camera store. It’ll take time for him to replace it all, and that’s time in which he won’t be able to work.

Out of interest, what was so great about this short film that they needed a (almost) one-of-a-kind camera to film it with?

It was obviously required, because apparently the lack of this $100k camera meant that filming couldnt proceed.

The article states that people even had to ‘fly back to sydney’ (wouldnt they have flown back to Sydney anyway?).

The CT story reminded me. My neighbours (in Giralang) had their van broken around 4am on Friday morning. The bastards found house keys in the van then entered the house to steal small items while the family were right there alseep in their beds.

Perhaps fortunately they weren’t woken and this was all pieced together later in the day.

Police visited several houses in the street on Friday and apparently buglary is thriving in the suburb (and Canberra more broadly, it seems).

Absolute worst nightmare scenario…

God that sucks. I had a 14mm prime stolen from ANU by a student I think. Seriously not cool. But hopefully this camera / gear turns up.

It does seem remarkably stupid to leave all that gear in a parked vehicle but we all live and learn just finish off the film with a Canon 5D 🙂

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but if I had a bunch of expensive equipment that was critical to my income, and which was not easily replaceable, I wouldn’t leave it in a truck on the street.

I’ll keep an eye open, what should I bid for it?

I’ve had camera gear stolen twice. Some of it I was certain was one of only a couple in Canberra. Nothing as expensive as a $100k camera though but still over $10k worth. Only the opportunist thieves sell it somewhere they can get caught. Most of what you provide police is purely for identification if they happen to bust a stolen goods syndicate etc etc.

Fortunately my stuff was insured and its really the only way to go. I know several police and they just don’t have time or resources. Something like your friends though may be easier to track, but who knows.

Best of luck.
