The Canberra Times reports at length on the sentencing of former mortgage broker Kelvin Mark Skeers who went to illegal and dishonest lengths to secure mortgages for his clients, and in the process netted himself $7,000 in fees.

His employer, ACT Mortgages, also cleared $30,000 on the deal.

In sentencing Justice Gray has given Mr Skeers a two year good behaviour bond and a significant chunk of community service.

How did it catch up with him? He got a slap on the wrist and a “don’t do it again”.

He’s got little hope of working in a white collar job or any position of trust, which must count for something.

When I went to get a loan I got offered 400K. now there is no way I could afford repayments on that loan (being a single income person), which is why I only borrowed the 250k that I needed and wanted to buy my house.

I do wonder where responsbility lies with this though. I guess I was merely using them as a tool to get the best loan, and already had figured out where my finances were at prior. But maybe some people go for both reasons.

This scammer is one part of a far larger picture, and seems to be one of the very few actually before the courts.

There is a whole financial industry based on smoke and mirrors.

barking toad, you are partly right, but this industry is very good at sucking in vulnerable people, and also presenting itself as being on the up. There are many victims and not all of there were stupid. Some just believed the hype.

These lowlifes, and there are plenty of them in the financial industry, need to be collectively and individually brought before the justice system.

Wouldn’t a fine have been appropriate? I’m thinking around the $7k mark.

Karma has got them for borrowing more money they could afford

Dodgy brokers and dodgy borrowers copped their karma

How did it catch up with him? He got a slap on the wrist and a “don’t do it again”. Meanwhile some of the families that he scammed into getting bigger loans have now gone bankrupt. What’s Karma doing about them?

Haha, Karma really does work…. This guy used to be a carpet salesman and tried entering the cafe game, and went kaput quite quickly…

He had the cafe at Campbell shops back in my cheffery days (Circa 1996-2004, but it had a different name that i cannot recall.

My best mate worked as an apprentice there.

Kelvin was unreservedly a w@nker, and after shafting many apprentice chefs, I am glad Karma has caught up with him.

?Skips off to tell his mates
