Kelvin Skeers gets bumped to the Supreme Court where they don't read the Canberra Times

The ABC brings word that the fraudulent mortgage broker Kelvin Skeers has succeeded in getting his sentencing moved from the hard-nosed Magistracy to the potentially more merciful Supremes because of reporting in the Canberra Times.

“Today Skeers’ lawyer raised concern that a recent Canberra Times article, which included allegations about his client, could influence the magistrate hearing the matter.

He made a request that Skeers be sentenced in the Supreme Court, which was granted.”

So now we know Supreme Court Justices don’t read the paper?

at the very elast, the reporting is pretty shoddy, as the premise is pretty illogical. Perhaps there’ll be a proper explanation in the CT on Monday, if the matter is not considered sub judice.

engage humour module.

Yes, I probably am thinking of the High Court.
Even if they’re local, there may be sensible reasons for this. Like the previous magistrate’s track record with this type of case, or the defendant wants to avoid having to appeal the sentence in the Supreme Court by just getting them to do it in the first place, or the Supreme Court Justice whom the case is being sent to was out of town the day the article ran… the list could go on and on.

I just think it’s a bit of a long bow you’ve drawn.

Supreme Court justices are all local, are you thinking of the High Court?

Possibly just that the Supreme Court Justice isn’t a Canberra local, so would be reading Sydney newspapers?
