Key fob replacements in Canberra?

Hi Rioters.

The other day I dropped the key fob for my car and broke it. I need to get it fixed or replaced. I’ve gone to a few locksmiths who tell me they don’t do it. The only recommendation I have been given was for a certain business in Fyshwick that I normally won’t use on principle because they have ripped me off before. I did stoop low and went to ask them anyway and they instantly suggested they could sell me a whole new central locking system. I figure it would be cheaper just to order a new fob and receiver unit, not a whole new central locking system. I also don’t want to pay 3 hours of labor for 20 minutes of work (again!).

Anyway. Anyone know who repairs key fobs or sells and installs new receiver and fobs? Preferably some one good. It is an after market fob for a Mitsubishi.

If its an aftermarket system then you may have trouble. Brands and models of those things tend to come and go unless they’re the real top of the range systems and spare parts for cheaper systems are pretty much non existent.

Have you checked eBay yet? Class locksmiths in Fyshwick have most Genuine Style remotes, and some aftermarket ones for common systems.

Why can’t you get a replacement key from the distributor?

We did that at one point, too … cost about 3 times as much as the mall kiosk for effectively identical product and significantly (mind-blowingly) worse service.

If I’ve learned one thing about cars, it’s that dealers/distributors are to be used as an absolute last resort.

Mr Minute ground floor outside of JB Hi-Fi in the Belco Mall is also excellent. Great service and they seem to have everything there.

+1 for these guys … I got a spare remote for a Magna there, as good as a newie.

The key cutting guy in Riverside Plaza in Queanbo did a couple of new keys (including remote control) for my Holden a few years ago. Pretty well priced, too, as I recall.

Are you desperate for central locking, or just need the key to deactivate the immobiliser to get the car started?

Try the key fob place outside Woolies in Belconnen mall.
They did me a clone for a Toyota key which de-activates the immobiliser, but it doesn’t work with the central locking, must be a manual unlock turning the key…about $70.
Not sure if they can fix a broken one but worth a go.

Thanks Jim.
I’ll give it a try.
