The duplication of Horse Park Drive has reached a key milestone with traffic switching to the new carriageway between the Gundaroo Drive-David Walsh Avenue intersection and Mulligans Flat Road.

Traffic has partially moved onto the new approximately 1.5-kilometre stretch and the Deputy Director-General of City Services Jim Corrigan says the duplication is one step closer to completion.

The entire Horse Park Drive duplication between the Federal Highway and Katherine Road West is expected to be completed early next year, weather permitting.

“The Gungahlin region is growing and Horse Park Drive is a key access road for the region with around 18,000 vehicles travelling on it each day,” Mr Corrigan said.

“The duplication of this important road will help service the thousands of new residents expected in the area over the coming decade. It will increase capacity, reduce congestion and improve safety for all road users.

“This traffic switch will provide better access for the construction team to complete works at the intersections and in the median area between the two carriageways.”

Construction has also started on the duplication between Well Station Drive and the Federal Highway. It includes:

  • Duplication of the road to provide two lanes in each direction
  • A new three-metre wide shared path along the southern side of Horse Park Drive
  • A new road bridge and shared path bridge over Sullivans Creek
  • Resurfacing of existing carriageway to ensure it matches the road condition of the new carriageway, and
  • Better access to the parking area for the Goorooyarroo Nature Park.

The existing Goorooyarroo south car park will be temporarily closed during construction and moved approximately 1.7 kilometres east towards the Federal Highway. Drivers are asked to be mindful of the changed traffic arrangements and adhere to the work zone speed limits.

The ACT Government thanks everyone for their patience while this important road duplication continues.
