Key Register - Scam in Canberra?

Here at the headquarters for the Aurelius international empire, we just had someone drop in – a salesman type – asking questions on behalf of something called “Commonwealth Building Key Register” (who don’t seem to appear in Google). He claimed it was some business which compiles registers of who has keys to what buildings, and then they give these registers to the local constabulary.

As part of his spiel, he was asking who the owner of the buusiness was, who held keys to the various buildings, and about the structure of the Aurelius International Empire for Evil.

The office manager sent him packing.

I was wondering – has anyone heard of such a thing? What scam does he appear to be peddling?

I seem to remember I was a customer of this firm about 18 years ago, before alarm systems were common at business premises. No adverse reports at all.

The name is interesting. Given their long history, maybe they registered the name prior to some Govco decision that names including Commonwealth, Royal etc would not be permitted as business names. Suspect the firm is all above board, but perhaps a diferent selling system may be in order.

Gah… can’t edit my post to add the URL for Commonwealth Key and Property Register: http://www.comkey.com.au/

Note that it’s a private business, not associated with the Commonwealth in any official capacity that I can see.

What are you selling or do you have on your premises that would entice someone to go to the lengths of breaking into an employees/director’s house to steal the keys to the shopfront?

Oddly, he did not visit any of the other businesses in our building (and there are half a dozen).
And in response to P1 – he seemed to be only wanting names of key holders, not copies of the keys.

Hmm…sounds suss!

Might explain some of the odd looks I’ve been getting while doing my rounds as a Breast Auditor, maybe the key master was there before me?

Did they want a copy of all your keys to keep on file?

They sound like a affiliate of the wallet inspectors.

Did he look like the risen Mully?

I would try to get some ID out of him prior to sending him packing.

You should definitely ring the police and tell them someone is purporting to collect data on their behalf. He could well be scoping the premises to attempt a robbery, or anything else (the ACCC are good for information on different scammers, too).
