Twelve (12) juveniles were apprehended for underage drinking over the weekend (Friday 18 February and Saturday 19 February) in a series of targeted operations in south Canberra.
ACT Policing’s Crime Prevention newly established Alcohol Crime Targeting Team joined forces with the Youth Crime Targeting Team and members from Tuggeranong Police Station for a two (2) day targeted operation on underage drinking in locations identified by police as problem areas.
The juveniles apprehended ranged in age from 14 to 17 years old. They were taken to Tuggeranong Police Station on each occasion where their parents and guardians were contacted. The juveniles were later released into the custody of these adults.
Crime Prevention Superintendent Kylie Flower considers the weekend operation to be a success.
“Police identified those locations in which these young people were suspected to be consuming alcohol. Of concern to police is that juveniles who consume alcohol run a high risk of becoming victims of crime or being involved in anti-social behaviour. I would like to encourage parents and guardians to take an active interest in their children’s welfare and know where their children are and what they are up to of an evening, especially on weekends,” Superintendent Flower said.
One juvenile male along with three adult men, aged 23, 25 and 36 respectively, were also apprehended for drug possession during the operation.
