Twelve (12) juveniles were apprehended for underage drinking over the weekend (Friday 18 February and Saturday 19 February) in a series of targeted operations in south Canberra.

ACT Policing’s Crime Prevention newly established Alcohol Crime Targeting Team joined forces with the Youth Crime Targeting Team and members from Tuggeranong Police Station for a two (2) day targeted operation on underage drinking in locations identified by police as problem areas.

The juveniles apprehended ranged in age from 14 to 17 years old. They were taken to Tuggeranong Police Station on each occasion where their parents and guardians were contacted. The juveniles were later released into the custody of these adults.

Crime Prevention Superintendent Kylie Flower considers the weekend operation to be a success.

“Police identified those locations in which these young people were suspected to be consuming alcohol. Of concern to police is that juveniles who consume alcohol run a high risk of becoming victims of crime or being involved in anti-social behaviour. I would like to encourage parents and guardians to take an active interest in their children’s welfare and know where their children are and what they are up to of an evening, especially on weekends,” Superintendent Flower said.

One juvenile male along with three adult men, aged 23, 25 and 36 respectively, were also apprehended for drug possession during the operation.

but to suggest that a large number of ADFA students are involved in the regular public intoxication, public vomiting, large scale biff and other nonsense in Civic on the weekend seems to be drawing a very long bow.

Oh please, are you kidding? Seriously, go and visit Shooters on a Saturday night.

Or are you one of these people who blames all the trouble makers on “Duntroon” and claims they’re a separate entity?

This isnt WWII where chivalric soldiers would take a lady to dance. *rolls eyes*

Yeah, because those kids are behaving so nicely. Wouldn’t arresting the wankers in Civic decimate ADFA?

Where did that come from?

I worked at ADFA shortly after it was set up (a long time ago I admit), and officer cadets in those days were expected to conduct themselves in public in a manner that brought credit on their respective services, even if in civilian clothes. Anything else and they’d be facing severe consequences, including very early termination of the military careers.

It didn’t always work (young dudes + grog = bad news), but to suggest that a large number of ADFA students are involved in the regular public intoxication, public vomiting, large scale biff and other nonsense in Civic on the weekend seems to be drawing a very long bow.

If it were the case, I’m sure the “ADFA Cadets in Civic Intoxication, Vomiting and Biff Horror” would be all over the CT (and RiotAct) in short order.

These kids should be ashamed of themselves. There’s no way a cop would have been fast enough to run me down when I was a binge drinking 14-17 year old. Childhood obesity must indeed be a problem.

Agreed. I was also pretty reasonable at climbing things quickly, which the cops would never do.

It’s a glimpse into the mind of the type of person bringing up the next generation of law breakers.

This is a gee-up, right? These problems were caused by the Howard government bringing in the Baby Bonus and other middle class welfare like Family Tax Benefit A&B. Any more selfish, discriminatory handouts like this will only cause society to fracture even more and entrench boganism, hooliganism and juvenile criminality even further.

Yes, and well spotted. Although it’s evident that many of those getting the handouts actually believe that they should get more.

How a childless person on $50k should be subsidising people on $150k completely eludes me, but somehow they can justify it.

And I think you can draw a very short line between these increasing government payments to people for having children, and the larger numbers of poorly-raised children we are now seeing. Naturally, our taxes will be needed to pay for the various law enforcement and remedial action needed to deal with them.

What yas hear from police and newspapers are rarely true facts

What i read was that your son stole lost property, and didnt return it until you were caught. Perhaps you could have called the toll free police helpline, told them you had found x Detectives book, and it was at x house waiting for him. Particularly if your son had called them, might have taught him something.

Oh and one comma (,) is sufficient to break up a sentence, you dont,,,,, need,,,,, 6 in a row….

My son bought the D’s book home,,,,had lots of interesting info in it…..

Errr.. they do. They have specific teams that only do the city nightclub district and they make lots of arrests for drunken behaviour, assaults etc.

The poor buggers. Wouldn’t that just be the job of a lifetime, dealing only with Canberra’s best and brightest during their finest hours. They have my sympathy.

That’s a bit rich. You can’t expect parents to be doing all that when their kids are in their teens.

Given that, left to their own devices regarding binge drinking, these kiddies will likely end up being the ‘wankers’ who spoil your Friday and Saturday night’s in civic, I think the police are nipping (at least part of) the cultural drinking problem this country has in the bud.

I was going to say the same thing. Glad the kids got done.

You’re right, the Police should only target people that are doing stuff that directly affects you….

I was going to say that being a wanker isn’t a criminal offence, but then I realised that you may have been speaking literally.
