Belconnen Fresh Food Markets want to teach your children to cook, I can’t really see a downside to that. In the upcoming school holidays (from the 2nd of October) you will be able to send your spawn to cooking school.

In partnership with Nutrition Australia, BFFM will deliver a series of 90 minute classes over the two week holiday period targeted at 8-12 year olds and 13-17 year olds. Working with Accredited Dietician Leanne Elliston of Nutrition Australia, the classes will be interactive and focus on creating nutritionally balanced and healthy meals created with ingredients sourced directly from the markets.

“It’s important that all the kids have a hands-on experience to gain the most out of our classes. We make sure each child has a chance to contribute to each dish by chopping, mixing, assembling and of course tasting. The kids tend to gain a lot more from their experience in the class when it is structured this way”, comments Elliston.

“Statistics show that up to one quarter of Australian children are now overweight or obese[i], good health starts in the kitchen, so we need to educate these kids about easy and fun ways to eat fresh food and where better to start than in the heart of a fresh food market?”, said BFFM Director, Maria Efkarpidis.

The two week program focuses on creating healthy snacks that can be made quickly and easily at home under parental supervision including: rice paper rolls, apple pancakes and noodle frittatas. Each student walks away with a certificate of participation, apron and recipe pack from the class.

The Kids in the Kitchen cooking classes are an initiative supporting BFFM’s commitment to creating opportunities for children to learn about healthy eating and nutrition.
