The ACT Rural Fire Service is assisting the NSW Rural Fire Service with a grass and scrub fire on the Kings Highway, Burbong.

Update to follow.

2:58 PM

The fire has been contained and crews are establishing control lines.

Firefighters had to drive in off road to get to the scene and carried out a direct attack on the grass fire.

The size was approximately three hectares, and a small section crossed the railway line into the ACT.

A rapid response by New South Wales Rural Fire Service, supported by ACT units meant the fire was under control very quickly.

At the height of the incident there were 13 appliances on scene, two commanders and two helicopters.

Aerial support included an observation helicopter and medium water bomber.

New South Wales Rural Fire Service had seven trucks respond. The ACT Rural Fire Service still has five tankers at the site.

The railway remains closed. Smoke may linger in the area.

Cause is unknown at this stage.

3:25 PM

Firefighting crews are continuing mopping up operations.

It is expected the New South Wales Rural Fire Service and ACT Rural Fire Service will remain on scene for some time.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.

So we CAN work together to make the Kings Hwy less dangerous! Alert the politicians who control hwy funding!

More to do with the fact the fire was near ACT pine plantations that are worth $$$.

This is the time that donations (and significant donations) to both the N.S.W. and A.C.T. Rural Fire Services would be greatly appreciated from as many people as possible (even a dollar each adds up) to provide their fuel for travelling (many travel in their own vehicles to get into the fire trucks), to provide sandwiches, to provide ongoing costs.

After all, the rural fire fighters are risking their lives for us both in town and on surrounding acreage.

While many are working for a living and concentrating on work, these guys and girls take leave risking their lives to save our Cities (Canberra, Queanbeyan and surrounding properties running sheep and cattle our economy). Fruit and Vegie growers included!

Happy New Year to all
