ACT Policing is seeking witnesses to an incident earlier this morning (Friday, June 17) at Oaks Estate when a taxi driver was assaulted and robbed.

Around 2.30am, the driver picked up six passengers – four males and two females – from an address in Kingston and conveyed them to George Street, in Oaks Estate, where they arrived around 15-20 minutes later.

After the passengers got out of the vehicle, two males – both aged in their late teens – became involved in an altercation with the driver.

The 26-year-old driver from Queanbeyan was then punched several times by one of the offenders and a sum of cash was stolen. The offenders were last seen heading into a nearby vacant block on foot. Five of the group were aged in their late teens, and the remaining male was aged between 45-50 years.

ACT Policing General Duties officers and NSW Police conducted extensive sweeps of the area in the hours following the incident and Woden Crime detectives are continuing their investigations.

Anyone who may seen the incident, or the group of people in the Oaks Estate area in the early hours of this morning, or could provide any information which could assist the investigation is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers website on www.act.crimestoppers.com.au. Information can be provided anonymously.

15-20 minutes to get from Kingston to Oaks Estate!?

Sounds like he deserved to be robbed for taking taking them via Civic! Kingston to Oaks Estate would take about 6 minutes at that time of the day.

Nobody deserves to be assaulted and robbed. Speaking as a cabdriver, I have observed that people with evil on their minds – such as fare evasion – will often stuff the cabbie around first. Go here, go there to collect a friend or buy smokes. After all, they aren’t paying for the ride and they don’t care how much the meter ticks over. Maybe they got the driver to pull over so that one of them could throw up or relieve themselves.

There’s also several traffic lights along that route. Granted, late in the evening they shouldn’t be too much trouble, but the light changes at the Monaro Highway and Hindmarsh Drive intersections can slow you down.

All cabs in Canberra carry CCTVs and the images are taken automatically. If you get into a cab, you will be recorded.

I can just picture the Oaks Estate parents who had teenagers who went out last night saying “my little Johnny wouldn’t do a thing like that” …… yeah right

That’s odd.

In Canberra I thought it was customary for the taxi driver to rob the customer.

If its ACT cabs, then there should be some good pictures of the passengers recorded by the on board security camera.

I thought all cabs had cameras now? Is this not the case in cabs from Shelbyville Queanbeyan?

I may be wrong, but I think the driver has to hit a button to activate the cameras.

Maybe some CCTV (working) recording camera’s monitoring the taxis ranks in Kingston and Civic would be a good idea.

Yes but will not help in this instance as they were picked up from an address not a rank.
