Does anyone know of a builder in Canberra who will allow me to use my own materials, e.g. windows, doors and vanities?

All the builders I have been in contact with want to use their own supplier, and I have found that they are too expensive.

If anyone has any suggestions I would love to hear.

D R Fisher Building Projects will 6260 1742. You need to make sure you get the products to site in a timely manner and don’t hold up the building work.

A. The simple explanation is that it puts the builder, or any trade for that matter, in a difficult position when it comes to defects. If a trade supplies the materials and installs it for you then they are liable for the whole job. If you supply the materies for them to install and something goes wrong…who’s fault is it?

B. Trades use products they know how to install, and know they will work, because they do not want to come back. Owners such as yourself tend (generalisation) to purchase cheaper products that can be difficult to install, of poor quality, and likely to cause a problem down the line. Which puts the problem back into the realm of A.

The last builder I asked about this was happy to use recycled items or materials I had sourced – with the exception of windows which apparently have to be certified as compliant with certain standards. You can get appropriately accredited glaziers to test and certify old/used windows, but the process can cost as much as buying a new window. Anyway, try http://www.hallbuilding.com.au/
