A. The simple explanation is that it puts the builder, or any trade for that matter, in a difficult position when it comes to defects. If a trade supplies the materials and installs it for you then they are liable for the whole job. If you supply the materies for them to install and something goes wrong…who’s fault is it?

B. Trades use products they know how to install, and know they will work, because they do not want to come back. Owners such as yourself tend (generalisation) to purchase cheaper products that can be difficult to install, of poor quality, and likely to cause a problem down the line. The last builder I asked about this was happy to use recycled items or materials I had sourced – with the exception of windows which apparently have to be certified as compliant with certain standards.
