A big congratulations to 19-year-old Canberra local Nick Kyrgios, who last night defeated 23rd seed Ivo Karlovic in four sets at the Australian Open.

But despite advancing to the third round of the Australian Open for the first time, it’s not all good news for the young tennis star. His post-match interview with a Channel Seven reporter has been described by media as “awkward”, “cocky” and “sarcastic”.

If you missed the broadcast, here’s a sample Kyrgios interview response:

Reporter: “It was a good comeback from you in that fourth set, because you know, Newc [commentator John Newcombe] said in the commentary: ‘Lose this one, you’re into a fifth, anything can happen.’”

Kyrgios: “Well, yeah, that’s usually what happens when you lose a fourth set, you go into a fifth one, so um yeah, I didn’t want to do that because, you know, he’s obviously got one of the best serves.”

Did you see the interview? What did you think?

I saw his interview live and thought nothing of it. Then saw the reports of social media storm.Watched interview again and still saw nothing to write about.
IMHO it says a lot more about people who watch enthralling sporting events and feel the need to Tweet about it.

The biggest issue out of this “story” is the media’s example to make mountains out of molehills. In the 21st century it’s known as click-bait.

Nick is way more arrogant and cocky on court when he is playing, and that bothers me a little. But, hey, I wasn’t beating the world’s best tennis players when I was 19 so I’m prepared to cut him some slack and trust the word of those who know of him and say he’s very humble off court.

My sentiments exactly.

His interview was nothing remarkable. He didn’t come across as cocky. This is just ANOTHER case of the Canberra Times/SMH/Fairfax making a big deal out of nothing. Fairfax journalism is garbage.
