…. Part-time [members] would attract better candidates, perhaps.

Good idea VP, it might attract people (from both sides) whose primary interest is in good outcomes for the city, rather than in politics as a career. A lot of large companies are run by ‘part-timers’ (i.e. Boards).

I’m afraid that there might be some slight difficulty persuading the political class of the merits though….

The sad thing is that I’m not sure that the Libs will actually beat that field. Having watched the Libs in the Leg Assembly and Estimates etc, they seem to be enjoying smashingly the trappings of opposition, and don’t much desire to command the Treasury benches.

Following the honourable example of “I live in Macgregor”, I should declare that I will not be a candidate in 2012 or probably ever, that I am not a member of any political party and that I do not know any likely candidates personally.

Thanks Al. Yes, mostly they do. A few Wollongongs tend to justify the demand for change, but the great majority seem to work reasonably well. Dodgy officials exist on NSW councils, as ICAC suggests, but most aren’t, and there’s nothing to suggest the ACT is completely clean, although most of its officials would just be doing their jobs.
Providing a full-time creche, with support, for those pollies incapable of getting up the hill tends to perpetuate a political class in a jurisdiction too small to justify it.
Are you going to be a candidate Al? You should probably declare any interest in getting one of these paid spots when you comment.

C’mon Al – we’re all very interested to know if you are going to run!? There is already a fantastic candidate from Gungahlin who will be representing the Labor team (Meegan Fitzharris). I’ll be very interested to know if any Green Party members from Gungahlin will also be contesting the ballot??

*in the interests of transparency (in case anyone wants to know) I do work for the Labor Party. 🙂

I thought they looked ok, notably Brindabella. It’s not as if the ACT Legislative Assembly means a lot anyway. My objection is giving them – whether it’s 17 or 21 or 25 or 27 – full-time positions with cars and staff. Part-time would attract better candidates, perhaps.

You must live in upside down world. Because part-time Councillors works SO well in NSW local government doesn’t it??

The whole lot look pretty weak to me.

Brindabella looks a bit weak?
