Labor splinters over Territory self-determination

The ABC explains how a desperately weak Prime Minister is being torn apart within and without over the unexpected inflection point of gay marriage in the ACT and the principles of self-determination on which it hinges.

The really funny thing is this could end up seeing Tony Abbott in the lodge, which is probably not what the gay marriage advocates had in mind when they kicked this off again.

Perhaps if the ACT Human Rights Act meant anything we could charge all the federal politicians for breeching our Civil and Political Rights … specifically, our right to vote.
But the ACT Human Rights Act doesn’t mean anything and has no teeth, so that won’t work.

Can we find out who these particularly vocal people in the Federal labor party are? They seem to be particularly anonymous to we voters.

Make a submission to the Inquiry here

(Strangely, look at the address… The APH url calls this the ACT Terrirtory Self Government Inquiry, scoring both a typo -and- a tautology…)

this isn’t about gay marriage. it’s about our rights as territorians to self-govern in ANY respect (that it is valid for a state or territory to legislate on). it’s about our votes and democratically elected government counting every bit as damn much as the states. as a territorian and a member of the GLTBI community i am furious about the sensationalist link being made in the media and by pollies on this issue – i am not so naive that i don’t appreciate the private member’s bill was introduced with gay marriage in mind on the greens agenda but at the end of the day the bill has far more important ramifications than just gay marriage. the gay marriage ‘fear factor’ spruiking by the right of politics is making this a wedge issue it should not be.

come on canberrans, stand up for yourselves and the ACT – and put a submission in supporting this bill to the senate committee where it has been referred for inquiry. details are here.

Being a male political leader and speaking loudly does not make you powerful.
Just as being female and softly spoken does not make you weak.

Steady on. I think the ABC overstates things. I can’t see anyone swapping sides over this (pulling a Colston is slow political suicide for a Senator, even if he does have God on his side)

Much more exciting is the fact that the Canberra Times does publish some locally relevant content from time to time. Today’s front page editorial is a ripper – especially the last paragraph.

I don’t suppose anyone knows where the Senators representing the Shoppies Union and the Vatican go when they are in town? (The Canberra Times has published photos of them if you follow the related links).
