Lake access fears?

In the Canberra Times John Thistleton is raising fears that a tiny part of the newly created harbour at Kingston will not be accessible to the public.

The work will remove a 3m-wide access path around the harbour edge on Kingston Island, which contractors developed from reclaimed land in a $31 million project.

”The proposed harbour wall will be constructed, owned and maintained by the lessee of the block and not the territory, ” the LDA says in its application.

Mr Upton said the proposal was unbelievable, disgraceful and worthy of public condemnation.

With tens of kilometres of wild deserted lake shore available, much of it in parks that will never be developed, do anyone but a very small number of Kingston strollers really care?

I mean buzzy cafes where you can get $12 poached eggs* and read the paper and watch people row on the lake and have a grassy area near by where kids can run around.

I agree – watching people argue on the lake is entertaining.

@clp

fine by me, just restrict it to the east basin

Yeah well don’t forget my light rail around barton (a free circle line service to the museums).

I was thinking this morning something along the lines of Vancouver’s Granville Island – and really the Fishwyck markets should have been re-built closer to the bus depot markets (ok parking is the logistical issue with all of this but that shouldn’t be a major impediment). Markets need a soul – they should be connected to cafes.

There also needs to be places like the Bourke St Bakery chain in Sydney – does bread like Silos but much more accessible – easy to eat in and easy to buy bread and cakes from.

And places where you can have a beer or a glass of wine whilst your kids run around kicking balls on the grass (rather than playing in some inside glassed off area next to the skill testers which are merely training grounds for the pokies).

I’m with clp

Thats not really waterfront eating – its just eating places that are close to the lake.

I mean buzzy cafes where you can get $12 poached eggs* and read the paper and watch people row on the lake and have a grassy area near by where kids can run around.

I mean Canberra is full of sophisticated people – it would work a treat. But why have places like this near the Canberra Centre instead of along the lake?

* yes I know

This is the mystery to a newcomer like me

Yes, I care, and I don’t live anywhere near Kingston. Also, I know the Harold Upton referred to and he is not the sort of person to stir up a fuss without good reason.

regatta point, waterfront restaurant, canberra yacht club, the boathouse restaurant, brodburger, national library, national museum, national gallery, to name a few

What’s more important than endless path access is some decent waterfront eating options. I can’t believe that Brodburger is practically the only place to get some food along the lake. I know there are some plans along the Kingston Foreshore development but they seem incredibly slow in progressing.

Well if they do develop a section of lake-shore and the current path links up with it, it would be quite annoying (especially when cycling) for the path to simply be blocked by some apartment building and you have to go around missing the lake view and staring at the other side of the apartments, sends a bad message about priorities of planning in Canberra but you only have to read the local news to get the same idea.

In that event, the gov’t can just reclaim another three metres of lake and build a path in front.

Who would want to access that swamp?

The Governor-General must be feeling slightly less privileged by this news.

But there’s already plenty of lake cycle path that travels large distances away from the actual shore.
