Lake Ginninderra Teepee?

teepee on lake ginninderra

I was riding my bike round Lake Gininderra this morning when I saw something unusual that perhaps a rioter can shed some light on. In the section of the lake north of the Ginninderra Drive bridge, near William Slim Drive, well out from shore there was a pontoon, perhaps 5m square.

Unusual enough.

On the pontoon there was a largeish teepee, a BBQ and a chair or two.

You don’t see that kind of thing every day.

Who knows what/who this is about?

Hey Everyone,

Just letting you know this is actually the work of my very inventive brother (21 and studying industrial design). he’s currently working with the rangers to sort out something that allows him to keep the tee pee on the water but he loves talking to people about it, so if you ever see him don’t be afraid to say ‘ahoy’.

just to add a neat link

I think if it floats it’s a boat.

You could have some kind of tower structure.

Or you could have something that waan’t moored or anchored, beached on an island or something….

Just put a Red Black and Yellow flag on it and call it an embassy, you’ll be OK for about 20 years.

Paint it red and call it Brodburger II. Should give you a couple of years worth of leeway. Once that goodwill runs out, you can start calling it a cultural institution. Hell who knows, if they muck the gubbermint around for long enough they might let them moor it in the “Kingston arts precinct”…

He’s not indigenous, just a hick. I know the family. Oh, and THIS IS NOT NORMAL!

Section 31: Houseboats prohibited
(1) A person must not use a boat as a houseboat or place of living in a lake area.
Maximum penalty: 30 penalty units.
(2) An offence against this section is a strict liability offence.

Welcome to Canberra, we have laws and regs for almost everything.

Dammit. I’ve always considered floating a caravan on a pontoon on the lake in order to live close to the city without having to pay rent.

That sort of rules that out.

I guess the legality depends on whether a teepee raft is considered to be a boat.

Does it define a boat?

Yes.
See page 36 of the Act:
Dictionary
[For the purposes of Lakes Act 1976] boat includes launch, yacht, canoe, raft, pontoon and anything else that can carry people or goods through or on water.

Maybe everything, but not everyone. Therefore we just play the race card…

“I am a coastal Aboriginal, and this is my tent embassy”

No one would dare try to disprove that.

Well, it’s pretty much forbidden to camp on the lake shore. I can’t find anything so far that says you can’t camp on the lake.

Looks to me as if the native Americans are scouting the place. Has anyone told the tent embassy?

I guess the legality depends on whether a teepee raft is considered to be a boat.

of similar interest is

32 Camping and caravanning
(1) A person must not camp, or keep a caravan, in a lake area at night.

so as long as its not a boat, and they’re not camping at night, seems legit?

Well, it’s pretty much forbidden to camp on the lake shore. I can’t find anything so far that says you can’t camp on the lake.

It’s been there a few weeks at least. I’m interested to know also!

I saw 2 people assembling this on the western shore 2 weekends ago. Since then while riding/running along the bike path there I have observed a guy in his 20s I’d say, rowing a small tinnie to shore twice – most recently last Saturday morning after doing a spot of fishing off his deck. HMAS Teepee seems to drift a little – pic was taken perhaps Tuesday last week when he was close to the eastern shore, on Saturday he was moored more in the middle of that reach of the lake. Seems a bit of a length to go to to avoid rent! I would also like to know the story behind this.
