The Gubbmint is letting it be known that Lake Tuggeranong is once again best avoided.

Environment Protection and Water Regulation Director, Daniel Walters, advised today that testing has revealed high levels of blue-green algae in Lake Tuggeranong, resulting in the complete closure of the Lake. This action has been taken following advice from ACT Health.

Signage advising of the closure has been erected around Lake Tuggeranong.

What the east edge of that lake needs is a strip mall and some car yards, tyre shops and more light industry. Backing onto the lake of course, and fronting onto Drakeford Drive. That’d look nice. And the kero and oils washing off the bitumen carparks would keep the mozzies down.

Honestly, who designed Tuggeranong?

Why is an entire lake fed off that tiny Creek, didn’t they move the lake back and have it feed off the Murrumbidgee to keep it constantly supplied with flowing fresh water?
Why in an entire shopping district cut off from the suburbs by a lake to begin with?
Why is the shopping district not on the lake front?
Why wasn’t the shopping district built in the middle of the suburbs like where Erindale is?
Why weren’t the suburbs built surrounding the shopping district?
Why are they building down towards Tharwa instead of developing the land behind Tuggeranong?
Why are their huge empty slabs of land all around Tuggeranong Suburbs not developed (but covered in pine trees that poison the soil so not even wildlife can live there)
Why are their huge empty slabs of land all around Tuggeranong not developed for Food Forests and Urban Farming
Why are their huge empty slabs of land all around Canberra not developed for Food Forests and Urban Farming? The dense major cities like Melbourne and Sydney and even bigger like London have urban farm allotments everywhere.

I remember seeing a plan for the original Tuggeranong a few years ago and half the stuff I am saying is right in there, like the Suburbs actually being built back towards the mountains and the shopping centre in the middle of an urban district. Why did they change it?

I believe most of the answers to your question can be answered by requirements to not develop in the murrumbidgee valley

Not exactly.

The lake is where it is because of a natural flood plain. It was either going to be a series of lakes and sediment controls feeding into the river, or a series of ugly storm water channels like around the suburbs of Tuggeranong. Luckily they chose the former.

As for the CBD’s location, that is a mistake. West Tuggeranong was originally going to cross the river, but the corridor was developed and development prohibited. Under original plans, it was going to be in the centre of Tuggeranong, with natural traffic flows feeding through it. With no development to the West, that has left the CBD on the edge and a dog leg to get too. Infill and higher density development is a the plan to remedy this to some extent, and to give the lake more character, which goes to another point…

For some reason, Canberra’s planners have real problems working out what to do with lakes.

It has to be said that some of this stems from the real purpose of the Lakes, which is as flood control channels. Building around LBG for example has traditionally been heavily controlled according to 100 and even 500yr flood projections. I presume similar controls exist on the other lakes, though the documents are not easy to come by.

Anyway, for some reason, planners have isolated the lakes from the shopping and recreation precincts, save for some lake side parks.

The original plans for Tuggeranong had far more substantial ideas for engaging with the lake, but that didn’t happen. Instead of heaps of lake frontage, the College and everything else backs onto it, while roads isolate the main shops from the lake and poor development in between, around Four Seasons House for example, isn’t conducive to promoting foot traffic.

I did come across a scan of an old map of Tuggeranong a while back which had the whole district planned out (including the Murrumbidgee area) with suburbs marked and named.

I’ll see if I can find it online. If not I believe I saved a copy so I could flick it through to JB if anyone is interested

I’d be interested.

Another misguided barb MD. The word used in that context is actually spelt “there”. Too many dumbells and not enough books, methinks.
