Andrew Barr has announced a much better than expected lineup of artists performing at Enlighten:

The Parliamentary Triangle will be the entertainment hub of ENLIGHTEN 2012 with Lanie Lane, Eagle and the Worm, Anthony Pappa, the Puta Madre Brothers and Hypnagog among the acts to perform live in Canberra.

Popular local acts including Los Capitanes, Owen Campbell, The Ellis Collective, Brass Knuckle Brass Band and Fun Machine will also appear on the West Side Stage, which will be located at the ENLIGHTEN Entertainment Precinct in the Parliamentary Triangle.

Event organisers and BMA Magazine have teamed up to program a fantastic line-up of musicians who will perform in the Entertainment Precinct, which will be surrounded by five national attractions lit with stunning architectural projections and feature free entertainment on the evenings of 2, 3, 9 and 10 March between 6.30pm and 11.30pm.

Entertainment will include quirky activities such as Pollock Pong, an unusual take on ping pong which includes pots of paint and protective suits, and a silent disco where patrons grab headphones and escape to another world with a host of top Canberra DJs including D’Opus, Favourite Son and Jemist.

The ENLIGHTEN program includes live performance beyond the Entertainment Precinct. To see the funny side of politics, legendary Australian comedians Rod Quantock, Claire Hooper, Tom Ballard and Mikey Robins will feature in Show Us Your Mandate! at the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House on 2 March.

Cartoonist Michael Leunig, Nobel Laureate Professor Brian Schmidt, artist Felicity Spear and performers Adam Cook and Chanel Cole will explore our fascination with the night sky at Star Light, Star Bright at the National Library of Australia on 10 March.

At Questacon, top Australian DJ Tom Piper will reveal how technology is influencing music in Music Today – How do you play it that way? on March 2, while multi-award winning The Adventures of Alvin Sputnik – Deep See Explorer by Tim Watts will search for lost love through animation, mime, puppetry, projections and music on 9 and 10 March.

Against the stunning backdrop of Lake Burley Griffin, Claire Bowditch and the reunited 1990s band, The Clouds, will perform at the National Museum of Australia’s outdoor amphitheatre on March 9.

Owen Campbell is always a great show!

I’d love to see him play – but there’s no mention of him at at all on the Enlighten website. Apart from this press release, are there any details as to when and where he in particular is playing?

friday 9 march apparently.

he is awesome.

or you can just watch him busk every day in the city.

dudes a legend.

Saw Lanie Lane on that Adam Hills show last night. I wouldn’t rush out to see her.

Well it was a crap song. She is much better, sort of a folk/soul/country cross (if that isnt a whole heap of contradictory descriptions). A few songs on youtube – ‘what do you do’ was her ‘big’ hit.

Yep. Know that one and thought it was a fair effort, however probably got more air play due to that silly series Crownies it was attached to. Obviously over produced if her live efforts are anything to go by lat night

I think Chanel has well and truly atoned for her earlier sins with sustained contribution to the local arts scene.

But I’ll grant it’s funny how an ex-idol snuck onto the bill anyway.

Oh snap…I’d never heard that name before, and had no idea that was an ex-idol! Just wiping the egg of my face over here.

I think Chanel has well and truly atoned for her earlier sins with sustained contribution to the local arts scene.

Wait…where’s the washed up ex-Australian Idol? I’d just assumed that the ACT Government had a contract with Channel 10, and it was compulsory?

Chanel Cole?

Much better line up than last year’s expensive fogies.

In 2011 only 8k tickets sold and a good chunk of the $5.4m budget was blown (meant to pay for 4 years worth of festival).

Hope they have enough cash left to pay the local talent this year.
