The Department of Land And Property Services is asking for public input as they prepare a plan of management for the iconic Albert Hall.

Albert Hall is a well known and much loved Canberra landmark which is owned and managed by the ACT Government, on behalf of the people of Canberra. Having recently undertaken a major refurbishment of Albert Hall, the ACT Government is now seeking your comments and suggestions to assist in preparing a Plan of Management to guide its future use.

The Plan of Management for Albert Hall will be guided by three main objectives:
— to ensure the preservation of an important community and cultural asset;
— to ensure continued community access; and
— to deliver these objectives in a financially sustainable way.

They’d like the submissions right into the comment box on their page.

I’m fairly sure it does have disabled access, it’s just not at the front door.

Under the Disability Discrimination Act, all public buildings must have disability access. What gives Albert Hall an exemption? Just because it would totally mess up the existing entrance is no excuse.
Try carrying someone up the stairs there and then the wheelchair while the passenger lies on the floor. It is very undignified for the disabled person. ACT Labor is supposed to be for the disadvantaged I thought. I wonder if ArboretumLand has facilities for the disabled.

PantsMan has stolen my thunder. Everything I know about this Govt tells me they would deep down really hate having to keep the place. Must be a prime site they could hawk to some of their developer mates. The last thing they ever want on any subject – is our thoughts.

A ramp for the disabled in wheelchairs near the front doors would be a good improvement. Apparently this was left out when the last few million of “improvements” was spent.

That sounds good in theory, in practice though I think it would be a bit difficult given the shape of the alcove, the steepness of the stairs and the room available.

Maybe burn it down – thereby avoiding any heritage issues – so Stanhope can get some developers to pay him some money to turn the site into overpriced units.
