Damaged Laptop

Unless you work in computer repairs, you might not know that the screen is one of the most fragile parts of a laptop. A little pressure at a bad angle is sometimes all it takes for the screen to crack. Of course, dropping your laptop, stepping on it and accidentally jamming items like headphones and pens between the screen and the keyboard can also cause the screen to crack.

Broken screens need to be replaced quickly. Left untreated, a cracked screen can lead to bigger, more expensive problems with the laptop itself, especially if dust or moisture have a chance to get in.

In this post, we outline what to look for in a laptop screen repairer, and share where to find a good one in Canberra.

What makes a good laptop screen repairer?

While fixing a broken screen usually works out cheaper than buying a brand new device, a laptop is still a big investment. As such, you need to have confidence in your screen repairer’s ability to do a great job.

To take the guesswork out of choosing someone to replace or repair your laptop screen, look for these key traits:

  • Warranty. Check that your replacement laptop screen comes with a warranty. At least 12 months is ideal.
  • Use of high quality brands. Using off-brand screens might save you money in the short-term, but you risk poorer resolution and performance. Look for a laptop repairer that uses reputable brands.
  • Can fix your model of laptop. Different laptops have different screen sizes and resolutions. Whether you’re using a Mac or a Lenovo, confirm that your chosen repairer has the equipment and skills for the job.
  • Reasonable turnaround times. You shouldn’t need to wait weeks for a new laptop screen, especially if you rely on it for work. If the wait times are too long, consider looking for a replacement elsewhere.
  • Area of expertise. Check that your chosen repair shop has experience fixing or replacing laptop screens. It’s better to work with someone who has fixes screens every week, as opposed to someone who does it a handful of times a year.

I tried geeklabs and they did a pretty good job 🙂

I too need one, but can’t find any…….looks like it will now cost less to buy a new one

Damn, all too late guys, but thanks. Having it done via ATM Belco. $250 fitted.

Alpha Geeks, we can help you ..

Capital Laptops in Civic. Very switched on crew there.

Geeklabs.com.au

Did an awesome job for me when junior dropped my ipod and smashed the screen.

Thanks pantsman, a nice idea, but, as I say above, all that wil get me is a $100 debit and no further forward.

Try ebay with the model number. They go for about cost plus 5% and that’s about $100 me thinks. There will be instructions about how to disassemble on the web. Look for service manual on manufacturer’s website.

Got a quote of $250 off ATM computers in Belco, may go with that.

Nice though the idea of fixing it myself may be, I’ll not risk ending up with a bin full of parts, a huge bill, and no working laptop thanks!

Depending on the laptop you should be able to replace it your self. You can buy them off ebay. We got one the other week for $85 and it was a 10 min job to replace. I would suggest taking the lcd screen out and get it’s model number then you can search based off that.

Yep, it’s the LCD below that’s gone. If it’s going to be more than $300 we’ll buy the kid a new laptop.

Thanks for the advice so far.

I had a new Dell Inspirion screen replaced by PCEZ in Gungahlin for about $250
were the only ones to answer thier phone and give me a firm quote.

Depends on if it’s the screen or the actually LCD panel below is damaged. If it’s the latter, it normally isn’t worth it.

Depending on the model and damage though, sites like iFixit (http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown) sometimes have guides, tools and parts to do it yourself.

If the LCD panel though is damaged instead of the covering screen, then you’re looking at many hundreds of dollars.

Laptop not under warranty? Checked whether its cheaper to go to a third party than the manufacturer?

I know there was one place in the middle of civic that specialised in laptop repairs but I can’t seem to find nor recall the name of it.
