Last chance for earlybird tickets to the Jane Austen Festival

As a straight man it’s difficult to express just how little interest I have in Jane Austen (if you think you’re a straight man, but your eyes lit up at the headline, I’ve got some bad news for you).

But for our large readership of non-straight men it’s worth noting that the earlybird season tickets to the Canberra Jane Austen Festival run out on 25 January and with them the chance to save $55.

If you’re just dieing to know more about fashion, etiquette, cooking, bonnets, dance, games, and whatnot from the British Regency period then this is the gig for you. Also lots and lots of Austen.

I’m going to the next one – this year’s festival was a blast. So many cute “straight” guys, too. They’ve moved the website to http://www.janeaustenfestival.com.au . There’s even a Pride & Prejudice Ball this Saturday night in Reid.

… I’m really really keen to go and would love to have someone to go with. Anyone interested?

I’m interested in going, Bells!

The only true great English novel is The Snow Goose by Paul Gallico. 😉

What’s a Jane Austen -esque way to top myself ratehr than going to this?

I re-read my Jane Austen books a short while back, and I think that Eliot wears better. Austen is sharp and clever, but I began to find some of her writing a bit twitty. Eliot has more meat, but it’s so densly written you really have to pay attention. Her characters are amazing though. Anyone having trouble with Middlemarch would be better off reading some of her more user-friendly works, like the collection of mini-novella in Scenes of Clerical Life.

Sorry, 200 years later than JA at any rate.

Daphne D-M also wrote about 100 years later….

Nice one Ant!

Thumper looked up from his comic and said

I kind of lump the Brontes, Austin, Du Maurier, and whoever wrote Middlemarch all in the same sort category 😉

What, the category that they are all books with words in them? Du Maurier wrote bodice rippers, and is on par with those women who write fat books about sex and shopping with lots of gold paint on the covers.

Agree Ant. A great political novel, too, which I think would appeal to more than a few people here if they gave it a chance.

George Elliot btw, and middlemarch must be the most boring novel of all time 😉

You have to be joking. I think it easily qualifies as the best example of “the great English novel”.

Ok first of all, Kate Bush sang Wuthering Heights which is a Bronte novel.

Second of all, Mr Darcy (in the the TV series) climbed out of a lake. Tempestas would know this if he had watched the show with me more often.

I think he was mixing it up with the Bridget Jones filum where he does climb out of a fountain, after bashing up Hugh Grant.

Oh I beg to differ. Astoundingly brilliant is how I describe Middlemarch – and the adaptation c1994 with Rufus Sewell is both gripping and faithful.

Also, Johnboy, I think the gay man stuff was a tad overdone!

Will there be burnouts, public drunkeness and chicks flashing their tits?

Oh, hang on…

Maybe after the banquet? But I wouldn’t hold my breathe.

Colin Firth look-alikes probably have a pretty pleasant time all the time. Damn their handsome black hearts.

Too true methinks.

Perhaps there is a RiotACT event in the making. Which RiotACTer gets the most notice climbing out of a fountain? I’ll volunteer to commentate.

What if you are a straight man, but knew your wife would be determined to go?

Of course this may mean that any Colin Firth look-alikes who want to climb out of a fountain may have a very pleasant weekend in April.
