A 50-year-old Lathan man was caught with a breath alcohol level more than six times the legal limit and will face a level four drink-driving charge.
The man was stopped by police for a random breath test on Blackall Street, Barton, last Friday night (January 19) around 6.30 pm.
After providing a positive roadside screening test, the man was taken into police custody for a breath analysis.
The man’s ACT driver licence was immediately suspended when he recorded a breath analysis of 0.304 grams of alcohol per 210 litres of breath.
ACT Policing reports that the Latham man will be summonsed to face the ACT Magistrates Court at a later date.
Officer in Charge of Traffic Operations, Station Sergeant Marcus Boorman said that drivers who are impaired on the roads not only put their lives at risk but also the lives of all road users.
“It is the responsibility of all drivers to be safe on the roads and is very simple – if you drink, don’t drive, don’t take the risk,” he said.
So frightening that people still think it’s ok to drink and drive. When will the message sink in.
I didn't know ACT police ever bothered with RBT...never seen it anywhere in Canberra.
They do. They say it RBT but usually a targeted (TBT) one for people coming out of a pub late night.
I am amazed he could even get the key into the ignition.
Take the car and crush it before he sobers.
"I couldn't remember a thing about the accident, but the car was totalled".
Would it be wrong for me to want ACT police to beat up the idiots that drink and drive?
A lighter version of the drug purge in Phillipines.
Only six times the limit? Ha!
Everyone in Canberra knows you only get in trouble when you’re 8 times or more, and even then, only on your eleventh offence.
ACT Police changed their website. It used to have the annual RBT numbers, and it was something ridiculous like 170,000 RBTs conducted, but only 700 offenders (suggesting either a total waste of resources, or, a tactical waste of resources by conducting so many tests on sober drivers).
Either way, this guy will be back on the roads asap, licence or not, fine or not, rego or not.
Seize and sell the car as court costs, and send him to jail.
