Lawson and Crace cop a native title claim?

The ABC reports that Shane Mortimer of the Ngambrie has sent the Prime Minister’s office a demand that the sensitive flora and fauna of Crace and Lawson be preserved from the growing Gungahlinite sprawl.

“We have a responsibility to make sure that the land here is cared for,” he said.

“This is land that has looked after our family for thousands and thousands of years you know we go back at least 25,000 years.”

I’m assuming he’s bypassed the Native Title Tribunal and the Federal Court because his claim is too flimsy. In which case good luck with the PM’s office Shane.

the bloke is being interviewed on 2cc right now….

It would be nice to know, if this was granted, would the natureland actually be protected, or would teh Ngambrie property developers move in and build high-density real estate?

This is the subject of some hot debate, even in parts of the Indigenous community.

Depending on who you listen to the Ngambrie are either another local tribe or just a family group that’s drifted off from the Widajuri.

The Ngambrie are the driving force behind the Tent Embassy, not the Ngunnawal people.

Also the Ngambrie claim that Canberra from their word for meeting place.

I though that area was ngunnawal land originally?

If Shane’s family has links with this land for the last 25,000 years, can he let us know whether the burrowing bettong is indigenous to the area?

I really want to know.

When was Lawson moved from Belconnen to Gungahlin?

My understanding is that its a land rights claim, which is quite diferent from a Native Title claim. Given that an application for recognition of Native Title by unrelated parties over the same areas has recently lapsed it seems to be an interesting move.
