Learn Sign Language in Canberra?

I was wondering if anyone could tell me if there is anywhere that teaches Auslan (Australian Sign Language) in Canberra.

I know that CIT used to offer a night class but it seems to not run anymore which is really disappointing.

I have been interested in learning this for such a long time and am now in a position at my job where I have the time and money to invest.

Are there any private companies that offer beginners Auslan classes?

Any information would be really helpful, thanks.

There used to be an Auslan course run in Queanbeyan back in the day. I only know of someone who did it, so can’t tell you who ran the course.

Make sure you learn the swear words. Bullshit is pretty funny!

And not just swear words. Watch some of Adam Hills’ shows, his signer regularily steals the show.

I have seen them all and absolutely love it, so funny!
Thanks to all the suggestions, I don’t know how I missed the short courses on the CIT website, but I’m definitely going to sign up for the ones starting in October.

Obviously not a substitute for a live teacher, but http://www.auslan.org.au/dictionary/ is pretty cool with it’s videos and all..

As far as I know, the DRC doesn’t run Auslan classes as they are a service for Deaf and Hearing Impaired people.

I have some friends that run Auslan classes through CIT Short Courses, here is the link:

In canberra, the only places I would recommend are CIT (use of national curriculum, knowledgeable staff, trained interpreters, etc with a mix of both Deaf and hearing teachers).

The only other place I would recommend are those run via the CIT short courses using native Deaf speakers. They will teach you basic Deafness awareness, a range of basic lexicon and an understanding of Auslan grammar (very different to spoken English).

Be VERY VERY cautious about some of the online organisations that promote themselves widely as some of these are just franchises with people that don’t have a clue. Ie, people that aren’t native speakers of the language, and with minimal credentials … cough… to their name.

If you look here (The CIT short course booklet) on pg 15, there seems to be courses coming up in October?

Hope they’re not planning to stop doing these courses, I keep meaning to do them when I’ve finished uni studying!

How about

Good on you for your willingness to learn and make the effort 🙂
