We’ve been waiting for it, and at long last, the date has been set: LEGO has officially announced Saturday, 6 November, as the day its brand new Canberra store at the Canberra Centre on Bunda Street will open.

The announcement came after weeks of uncertainty caused by COVID-19 lockdowns.

The news was released on the LEGO Certified Stores Australia and New Zealand Facebook page.

“The wait is nearly over Canberra,” the post says. “We can’t wait to show you what we’ve been building!”

It was announced in March that the store would be opening “in the next few months”.

Now, seven months later, LEGO fans of all ages finally know exactly when they can step inside and get their hands on their beloved bricks.

The stores are renowned for their imaginative shopfronts and each store is custom-built to showcase the creativity of plastic block’s builders.

A mosaic of local landmarks, pick-a-brick wall and mini-figure tower are likely to feature in the Canberra store.

When the store was first announced in March, the Alquemie Group’s Richard Facioni said it will offer one of the country’s widest selections of LEGO sets, including limited editions.

It will also feature a range of play experiences, activities and in-store events.

“With one of the most loyal and growing communities of brick fans in the country, Canberra has been on our radar for some time as an ideal venue for a new LEGO-certified store,” Mr Facioni said.

“We look forward to proudly unveiling an inspiring new retail experience for Canberra which showcases the creative potential of the world-famous LEGO brick.”

Other LEGO-certified stores are located in New York, London, Shanghai, Denmark, Dubai, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Auckland.

By far, this thread has produced the greatest “Facebook Frolic” on RiotAct ever.

I feel sorry for the existing retailers who sell Lego, though.
