Less cranes on the horizon

The ABC has the unsurprising news that there’s been a falling off in rate of construction in Canberra.

A new report from Access Economic shows that the number of new investment projects under construction in Canberra is 40 per cent lower than 12 months ago.

While the ACT remains more protected from the global recession than other states investment is expected to suffer as a result of the recent boom in the construction of new office buildings around the capital.

Well, what were they expecting? Forget any global crisis, they’ve built a huge amount of new space

Was that irony, trevar? If so, very nicely played. If not, here’s your brown shirt.

LOL I’ll wear my brown shirt today in shame!

I have an inner nazi from my days in the ANU’s linguistics department, but he only occasionally peeps out…

Hopefully down enough to reduce the cost overruns in the construction of the promised water infrastructure and the building and refurbishment in Canberra’s education sector.

I have often wondered how so many new office buildings could be built at once, without a total collapse in the commercial space business immediately afterward. Are businesses and Gov’t Dept’s growing so quickly that they take up all the new space and remain in the old space as well?

It could be argued that the error in the title is not a grammatical error but a dictional one, since the correlation of count and mass signifiers is more to do with appropriate word selection, rather than the application of syntactical rules.

Nonetheless, I did enjoy johnboy’s reference to construction ‘falling off’. Very apt with our recent record.

And look how well Brisbane turned out…..

Sir joh Bjelke-Petersen used to say that you could tell the wealth of a city by the number of cranes on the skyline.

Must be a sign of the times.

“Fewer cranes on the horizon” not “less”.
