There is know lingerie in this game, just nice tight shorts and the breasts are covered by the pads and shirt but the belly showing.

These are real women playing in more athletic clothing which is really appealing and that is what makes it more sexy.

Dani123, there are real women playing real sports in lots of places. The problem is they can’t even hope to get the same funding or respect as men playing the same sports mainly because teams such as yours make a mockery of womens sport.

It’s a shame really, as four friends and I were discussing what sport we shall play next. The OP’s post sparked our interest. Now the only interest it sparks is that of the red texta crossing it off the list……

There are also moves afoot to create a proper womens gridiron league in Canberra. By proper I mean full kit, no tummies! (as a men’s player, you certainly don’t want an eyefull of my ample middle!)

The Tuggeranong Tornadoes have a team currently training – http://www.tornadoesgridiron.asn.au. The info there suggests that womensgridironact@gmail.com may be a good place to start! Don’t let one adaptation of a very enjoyable sport put you off.

Greatly appreciated Ado, will make some enquiries……..funnily enough I never played netball for the same reason – lycra frightens me 🙂

Although I do agree with Ben_Dover when he says that ‘hard and dirty’ rugby is a better sport (not about the oil of course; would make the ball too slippery).

Hitler played rugby? Who knew!

I take my good luck wishes and redirect them here then!

Dani123 it’s a shame the organisation assumes women need to wear skimpy clothing to play sport – what’s wrong with going naked and oily?

Fixed that for you.

No flies on your nose Mr Dover!

Dani123 it’s a shame the organisation assumes women need to wear skimpy clothing to play sport – what’s wrong with the same uniform males wear?

From the limited knowledge I have, I was under the impression the longer pants were multi purpose – not only to avoid playing in your underwear but to also fit padding into the thigh area for protection. One would also assume shirts that covered the ‘belly’ also served the purpose of protecting the area to a small degree from damage by boot studs and to house different forms of afore-mentioned padding etc.

Is the safety of the players being compromised so they can show more skin?

Do you honestly think ‘real women’ who are serious about playing the game would want to play in tiny shorts and a revealing top, and would care about looking ‘sexy’ while playing a full contact sport?

What kind of message is this sending to easily impressionable young women? Perhaps ‘You too can do anything the boys can do, even play a full contact sport – as long as you do it in “more athletic clothing which is really appealing and that is what makes it more sexy” ‘

I played various sports (contact and not) throughout my childhood and into my mid twenties, so am no stranger to full contact sport. Not once was I requested to wear clothing to make me look ‘sexy’ or ‘more athletic’. If someone had asked me, I would have told them exactly what I have said here, plus a few expletives to emphasise my disgust, along with that of my team mates.

It’s a shame really, as four friends and I were discussing what sport we shall play next. The OP’s post sparked our interest. Now the only interest it sparks is that of the red texta crossing it off the list……

***I have nothing against the Lingerie Football League – I think it’s a great idea. It is upfront and honest about what it is, and marketed as such. But a ‘League’ pretending to be serious but stipulating limited clothing to make it more sexy? No thanks. ***End rant :).***

Support withdrawn. I was under the misaprehension that this was a serious league, and the girls I’ve spoken to did not give me the impression they were keen to market themselves as sexy. I won’t be supporting my friends and family participating if this is the view of the LFL.

Sorry all, feel free to keep up the innuendo – apparently it’s not entirely unfounded.

Ben_Dover said :

Well if they aint playing the lingerie version they’ll get no support from me. If they want to play a hard and dirty proper game they should play rugby, like true Aussies!

Clear Troll, but take a history lesson sunshine, just the same.

I lvoe women’s sport. So- if you’re thinking about this- play a real sport instead:

Oh FFS. So it is basically the same thing as lingerie football but with slightly more clothing?

How about Grid IRon League (GIRL)?

Football is too generic; I assumed AFL when I first started reading, and of course soccer calls itself football (in most of the world).

I am too much of a wimp ever to have played this type of contact sport, but good on you and good luck!

…In fact, based on my interaction with the players and coaching staff, this is one of the stereotypes these ladies are trying to avoid…

More power to them.

But if the Australian-based LFL truly wants to disassociate their league from the “other” one and its image, then perhaps choose a different acronym and refrain from describing themselves as sexy.

Just a thought.

True, the ‘sexy’ comment made me assume ti was that god awful lingerie crap

I think that if the ACT can embrace roller-derby without the “I go for the eye-candy” commentary, the Canberra LFL should be no different. Thanks again Dani123 – keep up the great work,

I admit my first though at this media release was “hasn’t roller derby cornered the market in Canberra for teams sports for woman with violence issues”?

Thanks OP – As a ACTG player I’ve been aware of this initiative for some time and think it’s excellent.

I’d agree that LFL is an unfortunate “branding” given the existence of the Lingerie Football League, but I’d clarify for the RA faithful that this competition is definately not about gettting sports-models in skimpy clothing pretending to play a watered down version of the sport.

In fact, based on my interaction with the players and coaching staff, this is one of the stereotypes these ladies are trying to avoid. So please, be aware that ongoing commentary likening these ladies to the “other” LFL will only discourage prospective players (perhaps your wives/girlfriends/sisters/friends) from being part of a great sport. I’m not having a crack at anyone who posted for larfs or genuine questions – entirely reasonable given the name of the comp.

I think that if the ACT can embrace roller-derby without the “I go for the eye-candy” commentary, the Canberra LFL should be no different. Thanks again Dani123 – keep up the great work,

Obviously I could not volunteer to play, but I’m game to help out as team physio or shower attendant.

Pics please
