Liberal dreams for Erindale

Bear in mind that the Liberal road for electoral success runs through Tuggeranong when you consider their latest policy of improvements to Erindale:

ACT Opposition Leader Zed Seselja and ACT Shadow Urban Services Minister Alistair Coe announced today that if elected, a Canberra Liberals Government will immediately improve the look of Gartside Street in Erindale through better landscaping, footpaths and dozens of car parks, and will undertake further studies to identify additional cark parks.

Mr Seselja said this commitment is an important part of the Canberra Liberals’ plan to provide thousands more parking spaces across the ACT, and to clean up Canberra.

“Under the ACT Labor Government, Erindale’s parking needs have been ignored and local businesses have suffered as a result,” Mr Seselja said.

“That’s why if elected, a Canberra Liberals Government will immediately add more parking spaces to Gartside Street in Erindale, and undertake a comprehensive study for more parking in the centre.

“We’ll also improve the overall look of Gartside Street through better landscaping and footpaths. The total cost of this policy is $225,000, and will come from our already announced $700 million roads and parking package,” Mr Seselja concluded.

The area needs a major overhaul not tinkering around the edges.

Some kind of ‘Master Plan’ perhaps?

I think that you’ll find that ESDD (used to be ACTPLA), as part of their Erindale Master Plan (linked to above), conducted a study of traffic issues in Erindale. That study found that converting Gartside St to one-way didn’t really help the traffic operations as all of the traffic had to exit from one end of Gartside St, not both ends. It also found that there isn’t enough space to properly build angle parking on Gartside Street (as shown in the image above).

Follow the link above and then click on the blue box titled “Traffic, car parking and bus station – Erindale” to learn more about the work already undertaken by ESDD.

As an Erindale local I can attest to the s***tiness of Gartside st. That being said, a lot of the problem is the traffic there. Not only does everyone seem to drive like a psychopath in Erindale, the flow of traffic is poorly managed. I’m not sure adding more room on for cars will help unless they also tidy up the road, so that everyone can move about freely.

Agreed. Make Gartside Street a one-way street for a start.

Yea A One Way Street In Erindale-The Half Wits Wouldn’t Know What Direction To Drive,Even With Large Flashing Neon Signs And Armed Gaurds At Both Ends Of Gartside Street!
The “STOP” Sign At Denigan And Comrie Streets Is A good Example…

agree, but it needs more than a bit of a spit and polish, it needs a complete redevelopment.

Interesting that the Libs claim they can renovate Gartside Street, providing more parking, better footpaths and improve landscaping for $225k. This says one of two things: Either they haven’t done their sums or Labor have been totally irresponsible in awarding roadwork contracts.

For comparison, Labor stumped up $165k last year to ‘improve’ an intersection in Belconnen, which consisted of nothing more than minor modification of two curbs and remarking some white lines.

Yea but that’s Labor look at the huge sums they manage to waste federally with nothing to show for it.

The place is extremely old and tired and well over due for a facelift.

They should make the whole area a car park (with trees and landscaping). Drive in or out at each end. There is no real need for a street directly through that area.

That’s my 2 cents.

I could help them fix many of the problems in that car park for a lot less than $225,000. They just need to give me a bucket of paint so that I can draw some arrows and make the bloody thing one-way. I’d be happy to do it for about $100.

The arrows don’t work at homeworld so they definitely won’t work at Erindale. That whole part of erindale is a disaster. I avoid it like the plague.e

Erindale is the southsiders Dickson… Takeaway shops and restrauants.
One way would make Gartside Street so much better.

Sounds like I should be depressed about living in Wanniassa and working in Dickson.

But I’m not.

I wouldn’t be… Good food for lunch and dinner.

Erindale has the best Laksa I’ve tasted in Canberra. Dickson has the best Ramen.

It looks the same as the O’Connor shops………..

It only appears that way because of the permanent smug cloud. Most inner-north shops can be viewed in full technicolour with Hipstervision(tm).

I do like the desaturation in the top picture, makes it look like the zombie apocalypse is imminent in Erindale

Its like the Wizard of Oz, suddenly we have colour

Anyone that actually goes to Erindale at peak times let alone ever is a moron. That place is a complete wasteland hole that should be burned down like a barn full of livestock with mad cow disease.

Nice. So, you’re such an elitist that you think pretty much every person who lives in Wanniassa, Oxley, Monash, Gowrie and Fadden are morons?

Eat it, Voytek.

Yeah, Fadden is one of the most affluent suburbs in the country, IIRC. Besides, Erindale is thriving, economically speaking, it just looks like a squashed turd, but if you’re letting the aesthetics stop you going then i reckon you’re the moron.

We’ve got plenty of parking up the road at the Wanniassa shops & heaps less aggro.

Looks exactly like what was put up at the master plan for Erindale – love it when the liberals rehash existing Labor policy, maybe it is more efficient? It is about time for the owners of the shopes and concrete carpark to take some responsibilty for the mess they have created by making eat street without a good parking strategy.

I shall just have to ask the Gymnastics people to relocate then. Or perhaps just reschedule all their classes to other times.

Yeah sure.

Moron

I was forced to leave the safety of the Northside everyday to cross the lake into that s***hole to drop hubby off to work when he was running the servo there.

I think it’s good they’re looking at an upgrade to Gartside St. But I would like to see this extended to other local shopping precincts in the ACT. There are several that look worse than Erindale, including Hackett, Watson, Downer. It’s been a while since I was last saw them, but I remember Lyons, Kambah and Curtin also looking pretty ordinary too

There is nothing at Downer anymore, Hackett i’m not sure about, haven’t been there since IGA moved to Watson and Watson was upgraded a fair few years ago. Last time I was at Watson only thing they needed to fix was some of the damn potholes.

I wouldn’t go that far. Did you see their master plan for Erindale? An even bigger ratfcuk than it is now.

IIRC the masterplan from ACTPLA for Kambah Village was just that the first time around. Buy all the leases, knock it down and start again

You need a head on a swivel crossing the street or driving down there if you want to survive.

Amen to that, and the driving environment the area fosters is so hostile that pretty much everyone on the road is driving thoughtlessly and aggressively, you’ve got to look out for yourself as a pedestrian because the cars sure as Hell aren’t.

Yea I don’t agree with the 45 parks on the road the way it is at the moment is beyond having such stupid things put there.

It would make more sense to widen the car park (going into the dirt) and have people park in straight on both sides of the parking lot, then have it go one way. That saves me getting parked in again and having to go around people in such a narrow car park. Plus that gives twice the amount of parks there, which is needed with so may restaurants/fast-food places around Erindale now

I’m totally unfamiliar with the area, but I’d wonder what putting forward facing angle parking on what appears to be a fairly narrow and very busy road, would do to traffic flow and safety.

I’m a local and you are right, that would be an exciting Saturday night out. You need a head on a swivel crossing the street or driving down there if you want to survive.

Looks to me like their planning on replacing that dirt / grassed area between the existing car parks and the street with these angled parks. People park on them already (explaining the state of them) and there’s still nowhere near enough parking there around dinner time most nights.

“further studies to identify additional cark parks”

so are they expecting people to die in the street?

the whole erindale area is a mess and as a local, I hate going there.

the only solution is to blow up the entire precinct and start again.

Looks good.

Gartside St is an absolute joke at the moment and definitely could do with some fixing.

Correction: Prius-only carparks. Which I must say is a rather innovative and progressive policy.

As someone who sometimes likes a bit of take way every now and again, I can attest to the nightmare that is Erindale at 6pm on Friday nights.

Cars and people everywhere, no parks, no visibility and piles of dirt everywhere. It’s ugly and been getting worse every year as more and more food outlets consolidate in that strip.

Having said that, who owns the land that Zed is talking about improving?

I don’t normally agree with much that Zed and his team say, but Gartside Street in Erindale is an abysmal eyesore.
