Liberal leader Zed Seselja has noted that Canberra’s dysfunctional housing market is edging ever closer to complete breakdown as rents surge again.

He offers these solutions:

“We currently have before the Assembly, the Infrastructure Canberra Bill. The Bill is designed to streamline infrastructure delivery with a co-ordinated and detailed infrastructure plan backed up with an Infrastructure Commissioner and board of experts to provide advice on the delivery of these projects.

“We have also put forward a plan where one Minister is responsible for planning and land supply. With an Infrastructure Plan in place and encouraging development in the right places, we could go a long way to providing quality and affordable housing options of Canberra families.

Tr: let the developers do anything they want.

Yep. That should provide a few millions for the Libs’ next campaign.

Don’t we already have a planning minister [Andrew Barr]?
Don’t we already have infrastructure planning [ACTPLA]?
Why don’t we hold these accountable for their [lack of] action before creating yet another void that just eats up money for no real results? If the Greens were real about this they’d put the red tape away and do something like fronting up to these guys and pressuring them to do the job they’re paid to do.

Property prices only slowed down late last year (in most ACT areas), so expect rents to continue rising for another couple of years yet. Then we should be steady for a while (which govco of the day will no doubt take credit for).

I don’t think I could be arsed locating and reading the bill he mentions.

But I would like to know what he is actually proposing (instead of “bills”,”co-ordination”, “detailed’, “commissioner”, “board of experts”, “projects”, “plans”, etc. etc.)

All I can deduce is that he proposes a faster infrastructure deliver.

Sounds like too little, too late to me.
