Liberal Wrap

After yesterday’s chastisement the local Libs have kicked themselves into gear.

As a one off celebration of this activity here’s what they have to offer:

1) The terrifyingly youthful Alistair Coe is having a poke at the Government. He’s asking why the Bimberi Youth Centre, opened to great fanfare in September is still vacant while the human rights breaching Quamby remains filled with our recalcitrant youth.

2) Jeremy Hanson is forgiving Katy Gallagher for past maladministration. He says that only now the ACT is getting more Commonwealth money for health is the time for excuses over.

3) Finally Zed is taking a swing at Katy for her musings that a deficit budget might be a good idea in the current economic climate.

UPDATED: Zed appears to have lifted his quotes from this week’s CityNews.

Now tell me what could possibly go wrong with having Katy as Treasurer????

The very worst treasurers normally have a background in economics.

A little knowledge being a dangerous thing.

Costello and Keating for example knew bugger all and just did what their boffins told them to wild applause.

And Swan is a senior lecturer in economics and incompetent

‘Because he got busted DUI.’

doesn’t fit the pattern…for it to fit the pattern he would need to be Minister for Drink Driving…and you think you are a pedant…

Is the use of the word “got” grammatically correct in this instance? 🙂

Ka-ching – the Friday grammar pedant strikes again.

Because he got busted DUI.

…and you be the judge of her performance in THAT portfolio;

(From AMA 12/11/08, via Riotact)
“The ACT remains last in the country for attending to Emergency Department patients within the recommended time….(performance) has plummeted under the Stanhope Government since 2002, from top of the league to the bottom. In addition, total elective surgery admissions rate equal last in Australia…”

Canberra Times, 27th November, “Another Canberra GP clinic to close…. The Lyons Medical Practice will be the second Canberra GP clinic to close in four months…”

And Simon Corbell (Bachelor of Arts, U.C.), nevertheless our ‘Attorney General’ is this tinpot kingdom. Once again, you be the judge:

(Canberra Times, two days ago) “The criminal justice system in the ACT is on the brink of collapse”

There just isn’t enough talent at this level of politics. Our government has city-state aspirations on shire council-level candidates.. To argue that the Libs are somehow less qualified to rule than the current bunch is laughable. How could they be any worse?

I keenly await her suggestion that we just print more money…..

Conspicuous Service Cross.

“The CSC is awarded only for outstanding devotion to duty, or outstanding achievement in the application of exceptional skills, judgement or dedication, in non-warlike situations”

A bit precious to put it on his media releases perhaps.

But he’s earned it.

Vicki Dunne shadow minster for pies.

Mmm, pie. Lo bob?

Meanwhile, what’s CSC? Customer Service…custard…?

John Hargreaves, Minister for Corrections; Andrew Barr, Minister for Children. I see the pattern too.

It’s great to have the input from all these local political ‘experts’ that know **** all about politics.

Keating was infamous for wandering around APH in the early days with ‘economics for dummies’ type books under his arm.

Katy Gallagher may not have economics qualifications, but she’s spent years looking after the major portfolio of health, which has huge budgetary elements. I personally applaud her for coming out and saying what she did.

If we want to actually talk about portfolios and experience, let’s write a list of what qualifies the Lib front bench to have the portfolios they do. I’ll start:

Name Portfolio Experience

Alistair Coe – Shadow Minister for Youth – He is young.

Not true.

House of reps committees tend to be investigative rather than providing the oversight role of the Senate committees.

And frontbenchers don’t do committee work anyway.

Except for the small fact that Keating and Costello had years of experience kicking around parliament committees learning the ins and out of government monetary policy (for want of a better term) before becoming treasurer, and both had a fairly astute head in front of them as PM to learn by ozmosis…

The very worst treasurers normally have a background in economics.

A little knowledge being a dangerous thing.

Costello and Keating for example knew bugger all and just did what their boffins told them to wild applause.

Would that we had some nobel prizes in economics kicking around the Assembly; sadly we don’t.

Is there anyone better qualified that the minister not responsible in our very own confederacy of dunces?

From said CityNews article:

How’s she finding being Treasurer at, arguably, the worst time in the economic cycle?

“It’s a huge responsibility and I have no real economic background, study or experience or anything like that, so it’s a big learning curve,” she said confidently.

“I approach it with some nervousness – it’s a challenge, but I am a quick learner with good people around.”

I am flabberghasted.

Hargreaves, for example? I regard him as a politician of little character.

Zed and Coe come off like driods hiding behind a full windsor knot.

Probably nice guys, just seem to be really straight and boring. I like my pollies to have a little character.
