Zed Seselja and Brendan Smyth have announced a Liberal Government would think about building a museum for the Rural Fire Service:

ACT Opposition Leader Zed Seselja and ACT Shadow Emergency Services Minister Brendan Smyth announced today that if elected, a Canberra Liberals Government will provide $100,000 for a feasibility study into building an ACT Rural Fire Service (RFS) museum. Mr Seselja said today’s announcement is a way of paying tribute to the contribution of the RFS to Canberra.

“If elected, a Canberra Liberals Government will provide $100,000 for a feasibility study for an RFS museum on the site of the former Nolan Gallery at Lanyon,” Mr Seselja said.

“Displays would include photographs and videos, historical documents, equipment and uniforms.

“It’s an important way of acknowledging the hard work of the RFS,” Mr Seselja concluded.

Apparently it’s to be build at Tharwa!

Election policy to build Val a shed!

And with a Big statue of Val out the front in full Fire Fighting regalia?

I don’t know if Brendan is in the RFS but Simon Corbell is.

@Zenacat, I dont know if most RFS members would agree with you. The ACT RFS is pretty well equipped these days. Most brigades have a pretty new fleet of trucks, all equipment is supplied and we all just got mobile data terminals fitted to the trucks. A lot of sheds in the ACT have recently been upgraded as well, despite the usual delays and odd bit of dodgy work by contractors.

The proposal for the museum has come from RFS members.

Pretty sure most RFS Brigades would rather see the $100k spent on equipment / upgrades / shed accomodation, something a little more ‘useful’….

I know the ACT RFS is full of oldies*, but suggesting they be put in a museum is a bit of an insult isn’t it?

Um… Isn’t there one already in the National Museum?

There is a small area in the NMA that discusses the history of fire in Australia. I think the proposal is for a museum looking at the history of the ACT RFS (as opposed to the urban fire brigade who have a museum in Forrest).

A quick google brings up this link…

http://www.legassembly.act.gov.au/downloads/submissions/36.%20ACT%20Rural%20Fire%20Service%20Museum%20Proposal.pdf

So I may have to retract my comment that the Government has already given support and replace it with Government is already aware of the proposal.

I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure this is another example of the Libs announcing something the Government has already given support to.

There has been talk for a while in the RFS about this.
