In case you were getting tired of policy announcements I thought i’d bring up one that always gets a good run on RiotACT. This time the Liberals answer to what some perceive as a failing justice system.
ACT Opposition Leader Zed Seselja and ACT Shadow Attorney-General Vicki Dunne today announced if elected, a Canberra Liberals Government will conduct a comprehensive review of the ACT’s criminal justice system, and introduce legislation to make it fairer and more efficient. “Eleven years of ACT Labor has seen the ACT’s justice system plagued with delays, court back-logs, and sentences that do not meet community expectations,” Mr Seselja said.
“A Canberra Liberals Government will:
? Review bail, evidence, penalties, sentencing and parole law
? Review the structure of ACT courts, including the ACAT, to reduce delays and improve efficiency
? Empower Coroners to compel witnesses to give evidence in coronial inquiries
? Introduce “unexplained wealth” legislation
? Improve the proof-of-age card to make it more convenient and useful
? Provide more notice to businesses of changes to government fees and charges; and
? Improve the efficiency of court-imposed fine recovery.
Mrs Dunne said this comes on top of the Canberra Liberals’ already-announced initiatives such as:
? A review of liquor laws
? Better protection for our front-line workers like police and emergency service personnel; and
? Stopping the Labor/Greens plan for mini-brothels in residential areas.
“The Canberra Liberals’ approach to justice is founded on broad consultation across the legal profession and the community services sector, and engagement with people in our community affected by a legal system that does not meet their needs and expectations,”
