they should build a multistory carpark and charge little for it –
They built the new health center in the ACT govt shopping centre carpark (which was also the p3).
They are putting the linq apartments in the largest of the $4.50 carparks.
The ACT govt has $8 carparks behind the labor club but only 1/2 the car park is longstay, there are 2 carparks behind Immi.
The streets south of the town centre fill up around 8:30.
Belconnen has lost/about to lose 3 carparks (health centre, sentiel and linq)

Completely unsustainable. I’m all for public transport as its important for a city/town. But only major trunks routes can sustain metro style frequent services… our suburbs just do not have the density. The best thing that can happen for public transport is a realisation that the car is also part of the solution. A system which has high frequency to town/group centres with integrated park and ride facilities allowing people to drive part way, park for free and continue their journey on the bus. Allows people to drop off kids, pick up the shopping etc but also not to continual to congest roads to the city with 1 car vehicles. Won’t work for everyone, but a doubling of patronage to 20% of journeys is achievable with proper investment – in my opinion.

Your point regarding the bus travel time is my point. The bus can’t compete in many areas including time from the suburbs to the city. When I bus in rather than drive, it takes an extra 20minutes each way – when I’m not pressed for time, it works for me.

However, for some people, if they could drive part way to work and then swap to a bus with only a 10-15min travel time difference, then the bus becomes more viable (for some). In any case, with some small investment and strategic thinking, there will probably be a time in 10-15 years when the bus could be faster than the car in some areas.

From my experience there is plenty of parking in Belconnen… it’s just that people do not like paying for parking. There may be an issue at Calvary – but I don’t go there during business hours. Personally I’d prefer they sell off land for apartments/offices with lease conditions for xyz 24hour public access carparks (and enforce it). Same effect, taxpayer not paying for it though.

This park has been overflowing at 9:30am for a few weeks, complete with people parking outside marked spaces. Probably because it was still the cheapest around at $4.50 for the full day. As of late last week a fence has been going up around it, and the panelling was half done today, so I don’t think it’s long for this world before the Linq development gets under-way.

The car park across Cameron Ave from the ABS has been recently opened to the public (used to be ComSuper only I think). However it’s usually nearly completely deserted so I suspect it’s expensive.
