Liberals to oppose point to point cameras

The ABC brings word that the member for motorists, the Liberal Alistair Coe, is positioning his party against point to point speed cameras:

Alistair Coe says there are still some unanswered questions about privacy, because unlike normal cameras they do not just record the details of people who speed.

“What will be happening with these point to point speed cameras is that they’ll be recording the data of every car that goes by at camera A and camera B – the car movements of many Canberrans will be recorded on a daily basis and I think there are some genuine privacy questions that need to be ironed out,” he said.

Meanwhile the police are planning an advertising blitz to guard against a continuation of recent misadventures.

UPDATE: The Libs have been in touch to point out that they don’t oppose the cameras, but want to iron out potential kinks in advance.

Stanhope continues to push the voluntary money raisers as some sort of “road safety” device when it is clear that the cameras on straight stretches of roads do absolutely nothing to promote road safety and probably cause more accidents.

The majority of the deaths on the road this year have occurred at intersections where a vehicle has failed to give way. The next cause is driver inattention/falling asleep where one vehicle has crossed to the incorrect side of the road or hit an inanimate object. How many road deaths would have been prevented by Stanhope’s stupid idea about putting up more cameras or point to point cameras? Around about none.

If Stanhope was serious about road safety, he would be putting more police on the road, or if he really wants to put some cameras up, they should all be placed at traffic light intersections. Red lights seem to become more and more optional these days.

I can think of 5 cameras where fatals have occurred in close proximity. Federal Highway, Tuggeranong Pkwy(cotter bridge and hindmarsh overpass), Canberra Ave(newcastle st) and Monaro Highway (Hindmarsh Dr).

Speed camera’s/red light camera’s are great and there should be more of them. However on stretches of road the ACT Govt would be better off randomly using vans or Police patrols.

Having said that, Speed camera’s are much cheaper to run over a longer period of time and have the same affect as a speed van (except the randomess!!). People slow down for the camera and speed up again.

More importantly we have to change the attitudes of road users. How we do that I guess is the million dollar question?

Maybe we can ask the minister what plans they have to change the attitudes of drivers?

Nothing is a substitute for at least one police patrol being in every suburb and patrolling on every major stretch of road 24/7. Yes police patrols cost more, but they’re able to spot an almost infinite amount of other crimes taking place compared to speed cameras.

You’re dreaming! Police numbers will never come close to allowing a patrol in each suburb and every major arterial.

If fixed speed cameras were placed in black spots, rather than being placed in the best revenue-raising spots, I’d be all for them.

It takes 10 to 20 years to get an alleged murderer to Court in the ACT…

Speed cameras are about revenue… nothing more.

One day we’ll have murder cameras to take a photo of murderers in the act… they’ll be sent a notice in the mail 4-6 weeks later letting them know they’ve been caught and that their penalty is 10-20 years. If they wish to object they’ll be able to do so in writing.

so what are these ‘genuine privacy questions’? No seriously, what are they?

Add in R.A.P.I.D and the police have a watched state inclusive of E-Gaol gates.

No shocker that the police are planning an advertising blitz, perhaps just happens to occur around election time at express cost to anyone needing arrest for lack of money.

True. And it’s why they fit right in.

Right or wrong, there is nothing new here. This is already the case all over Sydney — the data gathering from cameras, that is, not the point-to-point bit
