Liberals trousering emergency relief money

In the Canberra Times Noel Towell has the terrifying news about what our alternative party of Government is willing to get up to before being handed any real power:

The Canberra Liberals claimed $10,000 of emergency relief money meant to help Canberra’s poor and needy and spent it on gift vouchers for their political supporters, official documents show.

Papers obtained by The Canberra Times reveal the party then failed to properly disclose the payment it received in November 2009 to electoral authorities.

The cash was part of an urgent assistance fund rushed through by the ACT Government after the onset of the global financial crisis and was intended to help carers and volunteers to continue their work during the financial crisis.

Stay classy.

The Liberals are the party of economic rationalism, and this is just an example in its extreme form. Grab as much money as possible as fast as possible, or dog eat dog, or I’m alright jack and get your hand off my stack. I don’t even understand why they call themselves liberal anymore.

Wot I don’t unnerstand about the Libs having a regular whinge about the ability of the Labor party to generate truckloads of cash for their corrupt activities (electoral advertising etc) is why the Libs themselves don’t open a Canberra Liberal Club, and watch the truckloads of cash come rolling in. Or do they believe their target market is already catered for by the Southern Cross Club?

Always wondered about that, but I suspect it might be because Andrew Barr wouldn’t give them the requisite pokie licences.

Let’s face it, they’re all politicians.

Moral turpitude on the part of the Libs here. They say they were cold called. I interpret that to mean that a party drone noticed the broad criteria for the grant and rang another party drone. Give the money back, and stop trying to deflect attention by pointing elsewhere. That’s the right thing to do and you know it. Even your own mothers would be ashamed of you.

Holy momma – I can’t believe they pull this kind of crap, yet their political life seems to go on largely unaffected. That is just outrageous.

(I’m referring to the original article by the way, not the off-topic stuff about a bus trial).

hahahaha If we had a Greens Government we wouldn’t have any money to do anything, those goofballs think that spending $1800 per person for Nightriders services are acceptable. Just remember when it comes to spending other peoples money for no or little benefit Vote 1 GREENA vote for Green means a vote for Bankruptcy

Wow, $1800 per person now!

Options:
1. They might be able to show it is all above board and their volunteers really were needy (eg displaced Housing ACT clients waiting for the ACT Ombudsman to help out); or
2. More likely, they can’t even cover up corruption competently

Since the Libs main defence is that the Canberra Labor Club (a commercial organisation and fundraising arm of the ALP) got twice as much, I would be very surprised to see the first option come to pass. But then, for all I know those Libs are prepping that person-in-need for their counter-story for the CT as we speak.

The more things change…

Clearly we need a Greens government.
