Libraries ACT wants to teach you how to speak Pirate.

Talk like a Pirate Day isn’t until September, so they’ve timed their announcement quite poorly, but still I’m sure some would like to get an early start learning to speak Pirate which is apparently a real language and not just a funny way of talking.

You can now download an app from the library and start learning any of 49 different languages.

Is it just me or are libraries getting weirder? Libraries ACT seem to be getting up to a whole bunch of wacky and interesting recently, none of which seems to involve lending books to people.

Still, learning pirate does sound pretty cool.

“You may not have realised that pirate was a language, but it is, and you can learn to speak it fluently with Mango Languages, which can be downloaded for free by Libraries ACT members,” said Vanessa Little, Director of Libraries ACT.

“We’re making learning a second language convenient and easy. The Mango Languages application is available to download onto iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Android and other smartphones and tablets.

“There are 49 language courses to choose from, consisting of 34 for English speakers and 15 that teach English as a second language.

“Since we made the app available in November 2012, over 200 registered Libraries ACT members have used the language courses, with French and Mandarin in the lead as the most popular languages.

“Mango Languages allows people to create their own profile so they can track their progress and pick up their lesson at the same point they left it.

“The Mango Languages app is perfect for absolute beginners as well as those wanting to brush up on their skills.

“After downloading the app, people have unlimited access to all of the language courses where they can learn basic conversation skills in only hours, or in-depth comprehensive language skills over a longer period of time.

Never mind teaching people how to talk like a pirate – they need to teach people how to talk. Oh bring back elocution lessons, please.

So true, especially for people who work in radio – I’m thinking of certain 666 ABC Canberra announcers in particular.

Oh God, not this “talk like a pirate” crap again. I thought you were supposed to shut up in a library anyhow.

Please make sure you’ve drained all fun and enjoyment from your own miserable life before seeking to drain it from everyone else’s too.

Who needs a nanny state when you have fun police like yourself telling everyone to be quiet

You can’t act as a pirate on ACT Libraries… no downloading Game of Thrones on the Internet terminals.

A library is a good place to teach kids their three Rs…aRRR

So long as they don’t just parrot the responses.

The librarians are helping you by providing three months grace to get access to the materials and hone yer pirate-speaking expertise.

The link in the PDF is wrong…it should be http://www.library.act.gov.au instead.
