Territory And Municipal Services has the thrilling news that the ACT Public Library and Information Service has it’s head around such cutting edge technology as email and SMS!

Canberra residents are being encouraged to help the environment by registering their email addresses with their local library to receive notices electronically.

The Director of ACT Public Library and Information Service, Vanessa Little, says the initiative is part of the Library’s commitment to providing customers with the highest quality service.

“By registering for electronic distribution library members will receive faster and easier access to their personal library notifications, including overdue notices,” said Ms Little.

“An SMS service for library members is also available to keep them up to date on when special item requests become available. To benefit from this service all you need to do is provide your mobile number to the library.

There’s also a mobile version of the Library service’s online catalogue.

It’s progress.

There are a lot of issues with the libraries but they’ve had email notifications for years. I’ve been getting them for quite some time, I can’t remember how long but it’d be at least three or four years. This is just a reminder to encourage people to register their email addresses – a lot of people don’t and then they can’t use email!

I have been using the library service for over 30 years and they are the best. Would like a special black ops team to take out those idiots that damage and deface community resources. Especially those morons who go through books correcting grammar and crossing out naughty words.

Thats a bit harsh – the ACT library is well and truely in the 2010’s – I borrow ebooks from the ecollection all the time -its an awesome service and way more 2010’s in my opinion than forking out the bucks on itunes…

Totally unwarranted criticism of the library. They have had email notification for years. Also they have (and have had for quite a while) a range of electronic media available for (remote) borrowing, so expect some promotion of that in the future. The reported initiative is the promotion of the email service not its initiation.

Agreed. I love the ACT library system. Its online reservation and borrowing system is a joy to use, and the electronic resources are brilliant (streaming jazz and classical, anyone?). Very glad to note the new addition of a mobile interface too!

and another frequent email recipient here as well – been getting emails from them when my girl’s reservations are ready for at least 18 months

And right on cue, I get an email from said service advising me that Jasper Fforde book is now way overdue and the fine’s still accruing. Huzzah!

Ditto on the email reminders. I’ve been getting them for at least a year, and probably more. It means the fines I pay for late returns are just large, not eye-watering.

Same here – the ACT libraries provide a fantastic service and I find the email reminders very useful.

The phase I was looking for earlier was “publicity drive”.

Library service catches up with the mid 90s!

Just checking my phone, and my email account, I’ve been receiving reservation arrivals, and “due soon” notices since February. I opened my library account this year, when I only just arrived in Canberra.

This looks to be a public encouragement, which seems reasonable.
