The Liberals’ Vicki Dunne is coming out against “mini brothels” in suburban settings:

ACT Shadow Attorney-General Vicki Dunne announced today that if elected, a Canberra\ Liberals government would not implement the Labor-Greens plan to allow multiple prostitutes to work in homes in the suburbs. Mrs Dunne said this is bad policy which would have negative ramifications for suburban streets.

“Recently, ACT Labor and the Greens supported a Committee recommendation that would allow two prostitutes to works from residential premises, effectively creating mini brothels in residential streets,” Mrs Dunne sad.

“Since this recommendation was first mooted we’ve been inundated with questions from Canberrans who are justifiably concerned about having more prostitution in their suburbs.

Seeing as we already de facto have these operations any policy against them really should come with funding for a compliance regime.

I knows my friend with one on his street doesn’t much appreciate his wife having to explain to confused punters that she’s not a prostitute

Shouldn’t the brothel have a red light out the front? Maybe their bulb has blown.

Which prompts the question, does anyone know the story behind the ornate red light on the building up the end of Corinna St in Woden?

Ooohhh, and +1 for this being pretty meaningless policy unless it comes with an upgrade the current regulation enforcement system.

I was thinking the same thing. Maybe get your friend to sneak over and swap the bulb at their front door (during the day, when it is off)?

I can see the ads now… ‘ACT Labor will TRIPLE brothels in your street’.

Anyone else get the feeling Vicki Dunne has jumped the shark on this one?

You’d think it would increase safety for a local sex worker to have a colleague under the same roof. Interestingly, the ACT Government is already aware of and allowing multiple sex workers. Case in point: there is an “intellectually mild” woman in the care of the authorities living in public housing in Belconnen, who has a severe gambling addiction and works as a sex worker from her two-bedroom public housing flat. She has had a colleague working from her second bedroom for the last seven years. Not sure how ACT Housing should regard flats being used as commercial premises in this way, but as said “intellectually mild” woman is putting $1500 a week through the pokies (this fact is well known to the arm of the ACT Government that is supposed to be looking after her interests), you’d think she should be required to pay full rent. She is currently paying “disability pension discount” rent on her flat. Must say that the definition of “intellectually mild” is interesting when applied to someone who is managing to run a successful business!

While i don’t disagree with you – i am curious to know how you know all this stuff about her life?, are you a family member of hers? or are you one of the government people in charge of her interests? or are you a housing worker big mouth who is talking out of school?. you know an awful lot, including what she earns, and that she is in fact ” Intellectually mild” as you put it. I don’t know this woman, but it seems odd that you would know all these intimate details if you were not in fact privy to them under some authority.

You will have to remain curious I am afraid. I am not privy to the facts via work or any dubious means, and there is no need for you to find out more about this unfortunate woman, who has been very, very badly served by several arms of government.

I agree with the Liberals on this one (a very odd thing for me to type). I wouldn’t want scores of sleazy clients parking in my street. I would feel much less secure in my house than I do currently.

More of a free love, indie biker sort of girl?

They should start by kicking her ass out of public housing if she’s earning $1500 a week.

Indeed. But they haven’t … and a Labor government clearly won’t.

Do they charge GST?

I thought the Libs were the party of “free enterprise” and “competition”. I can only assume they own shares in the established brothels.

Yep but they’ve always been conservative!

More gold-plated, unsubstantiated crap from Vicki ..
