Libs to create Government Accountability portfolio.

By Thumper 12 February 2008 9

In all the hoopla regarding kevin07 and the great apology ™, ABC is reporting that Canberra’s underperforming Liberal party has created a new shadow portfolio it says will highlight the Stanhope Government’s failures in the lead-up to this year’s election.

The portfolio will be named Government Accountability and will be managed by deputy Opposition leader Brendan Smyth.

Opposition Leader Zed Seselja says the new portfolio is needed to focus on Government waste and mismanagement.

I guess this portfolio will be disbanded if they get in after the next election as it appears to be an election only issue, rather than being long term.

And surely not even Smyth can stuff this up?

What’s Your opinion?

So why haven’t we heard more than a peep from Mulcahy on the extra $200 million in the budget, and when will this Accountability Portfolio actually try to do its job?

Mike C – I disagree that you need 3 things, I reckon you could do it with 1.

1. Completely open and transparent dealings, including the ability for the public to access data in an open-source esque environment.

I have always failed to see why the Government, apparently paid by me, therefore I am their boss, has the power to hide information from me.

Naturally, I am talking of a HUGE culture shift once the implications of what I have just said are realised.

they don’t need a portfolio to point out stanhopless’ failures, we see them pretty much everyday.

Steve Pratt, Brendan Smyth and that dipshit with glasses that thinks he is something he is not need go drive Taxi’s. So we can abuse them properly.

Three things are necessary to ensure a corruption free, accountable government. 1. A permanent, independent (of all Government agencies) investigative body. 2. Genuine Freedom of Information legislation. And, 3. reform of the current liable Laws to ensure that a free press can actually do its job of reporting scandals to the public.

The chance of any Political party of any colour permitting all three of the above exist simultaneously is very slim indeed. Another pre-election stunt. (Zed putting on his serious face notwithstanding.)

Thats not going to be a problem, Crikey.
Its a _Government_ Accountability portfolio, not an ACT Lib Accountability\Blamegame witchhunt.

Anyone want to clarify why this shouldn’t be interpretted as a dirt unit, since both sides seem to have realised October is coming?

Smyth is managing it….who’s going to monitor Smyth’s accountability. It’s like putting one of the contestants from Australia’s Biggest Loser in charge of a cake shop.

How is it that after all this time we still have Brendan Smyth sliming his way around public office?

Can I please have a “Brendan Smyth exemption clause” to ensure none of my taxes go towards his salary.

Didn’t Kevin Rudd do something similar last year – sounds like me-tooism, uh, to me.
