Libs to duplicate William Slim drive

ACT Opposition Leader Zed Seselja and ACT Shadow Transport Services Minister Alistair Coe announced today that if elected, a Canberra Liberals Government will duplicate William Slim Drive as as part of the Liberals $700 million commitment for Canberra’s roads.

Pointing out the obvious, Zed said William Slim Drive is an important connection between Gungahlin and Belconnen

“A Canberra Liberals Government will duplicate William Slim Drive if elected, ,” Mr Seselja said.

“This is an important road for Belconnen and Gungahlin residents and has been neglected for too long for ACT Labor”, who it would seem have been focussing on getting the GDE right, finally.

What other roads need to be sorted out as part of either parties plan?

You did see the article on the front of the Canberra Times website today that this is something that Labor has already begun doing?

Just saying, this is not a new idea and not something that only the Libs are doing.

That is not actually right. Labor have identified that William Slim, Gundaroo and Horse Park need consideration for duplication. However at present there are no plans so not right to say they have already begun doing it.

William Slim drive does not need be duplicated. The traffic volumes there do not justify it. Gundaroo drive is quite congested; that’d be a higher priority.

All these duplications being announced by the Liberals just constitute selfish bribes.

Every time I’ve been along it traffic has been reasonably heavy and I normally travel on it outside peak. William Slim and Gundaroo to Gungahlin need duplicating about 5 years ago when they started building all the new suburbs. But as usual nothing gets done until the election comes up.

While Labor claim its their idea, I note that their idea included in the budget is still just an idea as they have only funded feasibility and design of it, no finding or plan to actually build it. Typical..

The worst part about the Majura Park roundabouts is that the peak hour chaos there is mostly due to the poor design of the roads there.

From all around Australia, not once is Canberra mentioned.

I’m now reminded of how bad it was in other cities. From the West Gate Freeway emergency lane rat runners to Brisbane’s horrid congested unplanned arterial roads. The traffic is not really overly bad around Canberra. Let’s hope it doesn’t get any worse.

What ever they do I’m sure it end up going from two lanes in to one at some point they can’t help them selves

William Slim Dr, Kuringa Dr and also Gundaroo Dr should of been duplicated before GDE was made. Underpass under Barton Hwy would be good (like Russell) but would be very expen$ive, not to mention disrupting to traffic in the expected years it would take to build it..

The time to duplicate Gundaroo Road and William Slim was about five years ago, before GDE took all the traffic away. I commute that way occasionally still, and I don’t recall the traffic banking up past five or six cars any more.

There should also be upgrades of the roundabouts at Majura Road/Mustang Avenue and Majura Road/Spitfire Avenue. They should remove the merging lanes because inconsiderate drivers jump the queue and drivers are beginning to get aggressive by swerving all over the lanes to prevent pathetic drivers jumping the queue. It’s probably one of the most road rage inducing locations in Australia.

There’s no point in spending extra money on those roundabouts at the moment as the Majura Parkway will change the traffic flow when it’s built (however long that might take).

William Slim isn’t too bad. The road to duplicate is Gundaroo Drive – all the way through to Horse Park, which surely needs duplicating too. Except this can’t happen because there’s no room to duplicate Gundaroo… The entrance roundabout to Crace is a terrible piece of planning.

There should be an underpass where the roundabout is at William Slim Drive, Barton Highway and Gundaroo Drive. The roundabout is a major bottleneck and a high accident zone in Canberra.
