Visualise 30 cubic metres of glistening white sand, add two sandologists with some special sticky stuff, throw in a fountain and merry-go-round and you have Canberra’s very own SAND IN THE CITY!

Steve Machell and Dennis Massoud are two of the world’s cleverest sandologists [yes- that is a real word] who have relocated from Byron Bay and the Gold Coast as this week’s stars of the Groovin’ in the City program in the Canberra CBD. These beach boys are internationally recognised as two of the best so come into the city to see what they do with sand and their hands!

Truckloads of sand will be delivered making a children’s sandpit for the four days and Steve and Dennis alternating running sand-building workshops. [Incidentally, there isn’t an age ore size restriction on what defines a ‘child.] While one is sharing his expertise in the sandpit, the other will create that day’s sculpture.

Sessions start at 9.00am each day and finish around 2.00pm – the perfect time to take pix and films of their final creations. [How about a time-lapse video of the entire six hours? – that would be cool.]

Check out www.sandology.com and www.sandinyoureyes.com.au to view some of the superb sculptures these guys have done all over the world.

While you’re ogling at the creations don’t forget to take some pix and enter the Photographic Competition running in conjunction with Groovin’ in the City. There is a great weekly prize for the best snap and, in February, three very grand cash prizes totalling $4000 to be presented to the snappiest photographers.

Oh….and Friday is walk-to-Work day with heaps of other activities in Gaerema Place……see you there!

Obviously you have not been paying that much attention to Groovin in the City as it runs for 24 weeks and is mainly based around local talent. Any one interested in being part of Groovin in the City only has to go to events.act.gov.au and fill out an expression of interest of interest form.

…and i guess a couple fewer king’s highway hurtlers will account for the trucking of sand to civic… 😉

Hate to be a killjoy, but what does 30 cubic metres of sand weigh, and how much pollution will be emitted by trucking it to the city centre, and later removing it? There’s art, and there’s profligacy.

Mind you, I suppose it might prevent a few people hurtling along the King’s Highway to feel the sand between their toes.

Don’t tell me its a real word, its no more real than baconographer.

Mmmm… how can I become such a thing?

There’s a whole range of bacon related career options:

Bacomposer – One who writes songs, music or parodies about bacon or inspired by bacon.

Baconista – One who both prepares and serves you bacon

Baconographer – One who writes about bacon and bacon related events.

Well, I guess that depends on what you call a ‘real word’. The English language isn’t static, with the OEDictionary inclusions having increased to roughly 4000 new words each year.

Besides, we’re talking building sand castles. Just go with it.

I’m guessing they call it sandology because they didn’t know the real word, which in any case would just be a sub-form of geology.
Even if they knew the real word, nobody in Byron Bay would know what they did, so they’d have to explain every time they used it.
(sand-study in Greek would be ‘psammology’, for those who were curious)

Thus explaining to me the meaning of the name of The Psammead from 5 Children and It.

would be nice if stanhope actually allowed local acts in his groovin in the city gig…

Don’t you know it’s all part of the ACT Govt’s “No Local Acts by 2020” plan.

would be nice if stanhope actually allowed local acts in his groovin in the city gig…

but then what would we have to aspire to?

I remember when a sandologist was just a beach bum…

sounds heaps cool…even through i could totally do that at work.

sandologist?? if that is a real word, then it is ‘made up’ for people who play with sand only recently. ‘ology’ is a greek suffix and various ‘ologies’ have been in the lexicon for many many moons and don’t, as a rule, use the english word for the speciality with ‘ology’ simply tacked on for good measure.

that said, some sand sculptures are pretty amazing and this will be a sight to behold, if it lives up to billing.
