Visualise 30 cubic metres of glistening white sand, add two sandologists with some special sticky stuff, throw in a fountain and merry-go-round and you have Canberra’s very own SAND IN THE CITY!
Steve Machell and Dennis Massoud are two of the world’s cleverest sandologists [yes- that is a real word] who have relocated from Byron Bay and the Gold Coast as this week’s stars of the Groovin’ in the City program in the Canberra CBD. These beach boys are internationally recognised as two of the best so come into the city to see what they do with sand and their hands!
Truckloads of sand will be delivered making a children’s sandpit for the four days and Steve and Dennis alternating running sand-building workshops. [Incidentally, there isn’t an age ore size restriction on what defines a ‘child.] While one is sharing his expertise in the sandpit, the other will create that day’s sculpture.
Sessions start at 9.00am each day and finish around 2.00pm – the perfect time to take pix and films of their final creations. [How about a time-lapse video of the entire six hours? – that would be cool.]
Check out www.sandology.com and www.sandinyoureyes.com.au to view some of the superb sculptures these guys have done all over the world.
While you’re ogling at the creations don’t forget to take some pix and enter the Photographic Competition running in conjunction with Groovin’ in the City. There is a great weekly prize for the best snap and, in February, three very grand cash prizes totalling $4000 to be presented to the snappiest photographers.
Oh….and Friday is walk-to-Work day with heaps of other activities in Gaerema Place……see you there!
