Light Rail Feasibility study funding could be as close as the 2008 Federal Budget

With the announcement by the incoming Federal Treasurer that he is seriously looking for community input for Budget 2008, if a proposal by ACT Light Rail is successful, a Light Rail feasibility study could be Federally funded. This would mean that the first steps to implementing a Light Rail network in the Territory could actually commence as early as late next year.

“ACT Light Rail will be making a submission to the Federal Treasury for Budget 2008, we believe that a detailed and balanced feasibility study can be achieved for a similar amount that was spent on the on study work for the Belconnen to City busway that never proceeded”, stated ACT Light Rail Convener Mr. Damien Haas.

With the ACT Government belligerently dragging its heels believing that a $400 Million investment in Buses are the only option for the future of public transport in the ACT* and the Federal Government making significant commitments to the Kyoto Protocol and Cooperative Federalism with the states, the implementation of Light Rail in the Capital Region as a primary public transport mode simply makes common sense. Implementation of a Light Rail Network will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and a significant burden of the cost of implementing the initial stages of a pilot network could actually be borne federally. It may even make sense to be the ideal Centenary gift the Federal Government could make to the Territory.

“ACT Light Rail is simply taking a pragmatic approach to get the job done and Light Rail implemented in the Territory. If the ACT Government is currently not interested, we will take our case to the Federal Government to get the initial feasibility studies and potentially a pilot network implemented as a Federal project. So far as we are concerned it doesn’t matter if a cat is black or white, so long as it catches mice”, concluded Mr. Haas.

ACT Light Rail will be holding its last public meeting for the year at 19:30 on Tuesday 11th of December at the Belconnen Community Centre, Swanson Court, Belconnen. Items to be covered at this meeting will include input on the Federal Budget submission as well as presentation of the submissions made to ACTPLA and NCA on the Molonglo and East Lake development proposals.

“Burn, burn, burn, ring of fire”

Happens when you hang around with train nutters.

Johnny Cash actually, the man in black.

Jesus Christ?

Pandy, the problem we have in Australia with a VFT from an enviromental perspective is where does it get it’s power from? Yep coal powered power stations. It is a proven fact that high speed trains suck an awful lot of power.

That being said I would like to see it, and would prefer that over a light rail for Canberra.

With light rail the basic problem is Canberra does NOT have the population density for it. If we were to have one we would have to follow the US model and not the European model. In the US generally the light rail feeds massive park and ride’s who then deliver the passengers to the CBD. Problem here is we have distributed work force, so even if you built park and rides where would you take the passengers?

Note: Jonathon Reynolds in the Canberra Times the other day attacked the unsuccessful Greens senate candidate Kerrie Tucker. Not surprising coming from a Liberal. What was surprising is that he on his ACT Light Rail website opened his arms to the Greens several times as being the only notable party that would address his light rail meetings.

As for climate change initiatives, it is time now to put forward that a VFT is built linking the east coast of Australia. It is a proven fact that CO2 from jet aircraft has a bigger impact on climate change than a few cars that it replaces.

Waste of money.

Well Felix, the ACT labor government has our dollars and pisses them up against the wall in an unaccountable fashion whenever they like.

Look at grande emperor stanhope… he is going to spend millions of your and my tax dollars on some wanky trial water recycling plant…. $55m I heard…. it will probably have a bronze bust of him at the entrance, being the ‘arts’ contribution to this alleged capital works initiative.

All they need to do is to log on to RA and read the previous posts on the subject. But I’ll bet they would prefer to waste err…spend 11ty million dollar$ of our money instead on a feasibility study.
