The environmental impact statement (EIS) for Canberra’s light rail network is complete, has been lodged with the planning and land authority and is now available to the public at planning.act.gov.au.
A draft version of the EIS was published in June and after four weeks of consultation, the Capital Metro Agency had received 60 responses from the community and local businesses. The agency’s decision last week to use only half of the Magistrate’s Court carpark rather than all for the building hub for the initial stage of the light rail was in response to some of this feedback.
Minister for Capital Metro Simon Corbell said this was just one of many mitigation measures identified through the EIS process and that the agency had addressed any outstanding issues arising from the community and business comments before lodging the document.
It would move into the next phase of planning by preparing to lodge a development application for the project.
“An impact track development application is required for Capital Metro stage one, Gungahlin to City, and will include another opportunity for the community to provide feedback,” Mr Corbell said.
Mr Corbell’s office said that in preparing their assessment report of the final EIS, the planning and land authority had confirmed that they were satisfied that the final document considered all relevant impacts to the project and addressed public comments.
