The Health Directorate is calling time a day early on Jindi and Wattle Valley 1kg soft cheeses:

ACT Health is warning against eating a number of 1 kg Jindi and Wattle Valley-branded soft cheeses sold at delicatessens and independent supermarkets throughout Australia with best before dates of 21 December 2012.

“A national investigation is currently underway into a cluster of eight cases of listeria infection and three other cases possibly linked to the cluster,” ACT Chief Health Officer Dr Paul Kelly said.

“In this cluster, there has been one case in Queensland, Western Australia and Tasmania, three in New South Wales and two cases in Victoria.

“The Victorian produced brie and camembert cheeses of concern are 1kg Jindi brie, 1kg Jindi camembert, 1kg Wattle Valley double brie, 1kg Wattle Valley camembert and 1kg food service brie – all with a best before date of December 21 2012,” Dr Kelly said.

“These products have been voluntarily recalled nationally as a precaution, due to the potential risk of listeria infection.

“Consumers are advised to check the best before date of any Jindi or Wattle Valley soft cheeses and if from the identified batch, they should discard it or return to the place of purchase for a full refund.

“Consumers who have purchased a cut portion of camembert or brie from a supermarket or delicatessen who are unsure of the brand should also discard it,” Dr Kelly said.

Full refund for a cheese you need to throw out tomorrow anyway? Bargain!

I’d never buy and consume a soft cheese that close to the use-by date anyway

But that’s when they taste best!

They do. We had one recently that was about a week past due and it tasted amazing.

Ah if only i could be so cultured!

My partner growled at me for telling some friends how nice the ‘runny white slop’ was.

I assume she or he was discussing cheese?

Or rather, you were?

Thanks! It’s people like you who get supermarkets to mark down soft cheeses just as they’re getting good.
