I look live now at the Melbourne building, 55 London crt, as smoke rages out of the Melbourne building, It smells electrical and being lunch time one can only say it may be a kitchen.

The Act Fire brigade has just show up (quick as) and are going in… more to come

Fires have usually been the domain of the Sydney Building. There was a small fire at The Avenue in the early-mid 90s and a more significant blaze at Mooseheads in the early 2000s.

Good to see Melbourne getting in on the act.

Are you suggesting this might have been a bit of Sydney Melbourne rivalry?

I had my florist in the Sydney building when the blaze hit mooseheads. Was not a fun thing pulling on to london circuit seeing your building surrounded by firies. They did a great job, and reminded lots of folk in the building (thankfully not the Phoenix) that perhaps a workplace that is a fire hazard is a bad idea.
The boys from the old bin and the ave cleared their roof space quite quickly that week.
We just kept rocking on in our little florist.
The Melbourne might be a bit shinier after the refurb, but the Sydney has more ” character “

I’d have settled for Mooseheads going up again. Ahh well.

Good work Sid

(Hopefully nobody was hurt!)

We will have to wait for the slow Canberra times to come out to see what the story was, would look on line but who ever runs that site should lose his/her job, it’s just a mirror of news.com, if it happend in Sydney… thats news WE WOULD ALL KNOW THE INS AND OUTS.

Damn, Mezzalira has really gone down-hill over the last year or two, but they dont deserve to burn down…. yet!

I wonder how insured they are…?

‘Destroyed’ is a bit much. There was only a little bit of fire and a lot of smoke from what I saw. I’m by no means an expert but I doubt there is any real structural damage.

A fire destroyed part of the Melbourne Building? How awful if true.

Sounds like someone skimped on cleaning their extractor filters for way too long..

Whew!!! That was close. Thought the developers would move in after the demise of the Melbourne Building…….

Haven’t posted here before but given what I just saw I thought it was as good an excuse as any:

It’s Mezzalira. I was walking past and went around the back to try and work out where the smoke was coming from to find the back of their kitchen filled with it. There was a kitchen ventilation duct on fire in the store room out the back, showed the owner/chef (whoever he was) who had a fire extinguisher and he gave it a blast that seemed to put it out. Looks like the firies are just mopping up now.
