Live Gigs for Young Uns?

School holidays approaching, and I’d welcome suggestions from RA regulars as to where in Canberra I could take my almost-13 yo budding bass playing son to see some live music.

(He has just discovered that the Led Zepplin CDs -and flat blacks- in the old man’s collection aren’t that uncool after all).

Can he get into gigs in clubs or other licensed premises as long as he’s with me?

OMG those are some ugly basses! Speaking of sites not to show the young fella, my brother-in-law runs a vintage guitar online shop… http://www.grouseguitars.com.au/basses.htm

Hey folks, thanks muchly for all the responses, I’ll check them out…best not show him the great “weird basses” link tho, what with Xmas and his birthday coming up…

U-Turn (Belco Youth Centre) have a free Gig Night for the teens on Friday 3rd October from 6-9pm. Bands yet to be confirmed.

I’d say come along to one of our gigs except we drink to much and generally fall off stage and things like that 😉

All the best to the bassist. it’s a seriously cool instrument…

Thumper, is it still seriously uncool to be seen in public with a Steinberger?

If it is, I was just checking, you know, for a friend…….

I got in touch with Rosemary at the Holy Grail. Tickets for the Borich/Emmanuel/Joe gig are $35 through Ticketek. The Ticketek site says 18+ but Rosemary told me that underagers are OK as long as they are accompanied by a parent at all times.

Thanks for the info on Woden Youth centre misspriss

Most licenced premises (depending on their licence) will let you him in with you supervised until 10pm when they would have to leave. I’m not sure how many places would have bands playing before then though.

Hi Ramblingted – my 16 year old attends quite a few youth gigs at the Woden Youth Centre. They seem to be quite well supervised. Their website address is http://www.wcs.org.au/programs/youth_services/wyc.html

Youth Centre Band Night

When:
Usually every 2nd Friday

Time:
Drop in from 3.30pm to 10.00pm

Where:
Woden Youth Centre (Callum St, Woden)

Cost:
$5 to $10 (depending on what band is playing)

Contact:
Woden Youth Centre on 6282 3037

Some of the bands that play there have myspace pages and usually list their gigs. Some of the bands are Pleased to Jive You (I think they might’ve had a recent name change though), Paqman and Slovac. Hope that helps.

Pris

You should defiantly take him to Trackside at thorough bread park
Its an all ages event and its got heaps of really good bands!!
They’re mainly indie bands but they are still awesome

Methinks its the best music festival in Canberra. the only big one in Canberra. Oh and it is music festival season.

Tickets are a little pricey though

I’m sure if you show him the line up im sure he’ll know some of them.

Ive taken an underling to the Holy Grail in Civic to see Sick Puppies some time ago, I think its best to check with them before hand though. I know there is a guitar gig there soon. Kevin Borich, Phil Emmanuel, Smokin’ Joe Robinson, Oct 10.

Oh wicked, my hubby (also a bassist) has gigged with Kevin and Joe and Phil (at different times/venues).

I have an almost 13yo budding guitarist who I’d like to take to a few gigs also, so thanks for asking the question ted. Is your almost-13yo in a band? Mine’s not but he has a few mates who also play guitar and two of his cousins play drums, so it’s bound to happen sooner or later.

Duke Baritone and the Swamp Dogs (?) plus Doctor Stovepipe at the Merry Muse, Polish White Eagle Club, 38 David Street Turner on Friday night. Doors from about 7pm. Music from 8pm. $15 for you and $0.0 for the budding young bass player. Kids very welcome until stumps. He’ll get a few bass playing lessons he won’t forget! http://www.merrymuse.org.au

Also there’s a young persons’ funk workshop coming up soon at the Folkus. I don’t have details here but will post it later tonight or tomorrow.

The Green Room was running Saturday arvo all-ages gigs for a while, I took my 10yo along a couple of times. Sadly I think they’ve stopped running now though. You can try the youth centres.
