The ABC brings word of negotiations between the Canberra Capitals and their favourite daughter Lauren Jackson to secure her services for three of the next five WNBL seasons.

The proposed agreement would allow Jackson to continue her successful association with WNBA club Seattle Storm, with whom she has won two American championships.

It would also give her the option of returning to Europe, where she has had several stints in Russia.

Born 11 May 1981 she’ll be well into her 30s in five years time.

I was surprised to hear this news. The other night on Adam Hills’ show she said wasn’t far off retiring and settling back down to live in Albury.

That may well be reside in Albury, commute to Canberra for WNBL season and spend off season in Albury. Works for the Sydney based Brumbies.

what pommy bastard and kings thursday said.

also it’s being reported as a consortium trying to bring her back so it’s not like it’s all coming from ACT govt – although the government/ACT taxpayer money is much better spent on one of the top basketball players in the world than on atrocious league players or a second class sydney team.

With the current drunken money hungry morons running around in the AFL, NRL, Super 15, NBL and A league, she is a shining light of Australian sport. By all means welcome her back. This amazing athelete from Albury is one of the best, if not the best, ambassador for sport Australia has produced.

Seconded.

…and where would you rate James Hird on your sporting ambassador listing (Considering atleast he IS from Canberra?)

Bringing any person that is considered the world’s best in their profession to this community is a real shot in the arm for the city.

Even better is that Lauren Jackson considers Canberra her home away from home and will go the extra mile (and has done previously) to be accessible to the broader community is of great benefit.

A much better spend than the $20+ million on an interstate football team

She plays a sport, why does she and everyone else need to be an ambassador. How about we respect people for what they are (sports people) and not elevating them a higher world order just because they are athletic.

She can bounce a basketball ffs, not like she has a cure for cancer.

Ahhh the obligatory “I hate all sport and people who play it” comment. I’m not placing LJ in a higher world, just admiring and RESPECTING what she has done for herself, her country and womens sport in general.

She doesn’t need to sure cancer, Dr John Holt can, but he is otracised by noobs like you, the government and the AMA. He is a man who I also admire and repsect.

Didn’t KK say an ambassador for sport?

No mention of peace and world order that I can see.

There is a couple of Rioters that seem to use every mention of sportspeople as an opportunity to let everyone know their low opinion of sport and the people that play.

will taxpayers be forking out for her salary again?

At least they would be paying to help a Canberra/ACT team. Could always be Greater Western Sydney.

I agree that she will still be a superior player well into her 30s. Injuries may be a problem.

Jackson is a multiple WNBA MVP and arguably the best female basketball player in the world. There’s no reason she couldn’t be playing well in her mid-30’s. Michael Jordan was scoring 50 point games and winning championships at 35!
